Posting Summary: Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Full Time Staff Nurse for University Correctional Healthcare for Northern State Prison, located in Newark, NJ. The Staff Nurse utilizes the nursing process to meet a variety of health care needs with ambulatory care as a primary focus. Identifies inmate-centered goals and nursing objectives and implements prescribed interventions and solutions for the identified problems. Works with a variety of health care professionals and security officers in a correctional environment. Functions as a team leader as assigned. Demonstrates competency in assessment and identification of the physical health of adults (18 to 64 years), and geriatrics (65+) all population groups and their personal strengths.
Key Duties:
- Provides direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological and emotional needs of the inmate patient including adults (18 to 64 years), and geriatrics (65+) and their family within the framework established by the correctional system.
- Utilizes effective communication skills by demonstrating respect, concern and courtesy in all interpersonal relationships.
- Uses current knowledge to promote a safe environment for providing health care to inmate-patients.
- Maintains current professional skills and continues professional growth to enhance the practice of correctional nursing and the image of the organization.
- Adhere to personnel policies to enhance the operation of the health care unit.
Position Status: Full Time
Hours Per Week: 40
Daily Work Shift: Evening
Work Arrangement: This position requires a full onsite work arrangement.
Minimum Education and Experience:
- Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in the State of New Jersey.
Certifications/Licenses:
- CPR Certification required.
- Valid Driver’s License is required. Must possess own vehicle or alternative means of transportation from one site to another.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) or its equivalent preferred.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a correctional setting preferred.
Physical Demands and Work Environment: As a first responder must have the physical capacity to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes. Physically able to lift and carry upstairs an emergency treatment bag that can weigh up to 45 pounds and assist in lifting and rotating patients who are unable to ambulate (up to 50 pounds).
Special Conditions: Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.
