Building Support Specialist - Full Time 10 mo.

Directly Responsible to: Building/Program Administrator
Position Summary: To provide support to staff, students, and other individuals as needed to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the school and promote the overall vision of the district. Prior work experience demonstrating flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities and roles preferred. No prior experience in a K-12 school environment required. Non-certificated position - High school diploma required. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience preferred.
Essential Functions:
- Support classroom teachers and other school personnel as needed.
- Assist with instruction and related activities in a classroom or assigned learning environment.
- Monitor and oversee behavior of students according to approved procedures; promote a secure environment.
- Demonstrate effective problem solving with the ability to handle stressful situations, set priorities, accomplish tasks, and meet daily responsibilities.
- Perform routine clerical duties and prepare records and reports consistent with assigned duties.
- Participate in meetings and in-service training as assigned to acquire and/or convey information related to the job duties.
- Assist with building/custodial services due to staff absences and/or open positions, including but not limited to: performing cleaning tasks, and ongoing tasks such as filling dispensers and setting up facilities for student and adult use (not to exceed 4 hours per day).
- Assist with food services only when an urgent need exists (will never be regularly scheduled), including but not limited to: cashiering, dishwashing, food prep and serving, carrying cases of product.
- Promote an environment that encourages teamwork, collaboration, and ethical behavior.
- Maintain regular, reliable and predictable attendance.
- Willingness to obtain additional training in areas related to job function, knowledge, and/or abilities.
- Be a positive team member who understands the value and importance of collaboration.
- Recognize and follow board of education policy when disruptive, abusive, or dangerous behavior occurs; serve as a mandatory child abuse/neglect reporter.
- Maintain a positive image as a loyal representative of Westside Community Schools.
- Exhibit a reliable, punctual, dependable, honest and self-motivated approach.
- Perform other duties as assigned that support the efficient and effective functioning of the school and promote the overall vision of the district.
Expected Skills and Abilities:
- High school diploma required. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience preferred.
- Ability to adapt to changing roles and priorities.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment and software applications.
- Ability to perform duties with patience, tact and good judgment within established guidelines.
- Ability to read and write English at a level required for successful job performance.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to take charge of the duties as assigned and execute tasks with minimal supervision.
- Ability to organize and prioritize workload and structure time effectively.
Physical Abilities:
- Must be able to function effectively indoors and outdoors engaged in work of primarily an active nature.
- Requires the ability to use near vision to read printed materials.
- Requires auditory ability to carry on conversations in person and over the phone.
- Requires ambulatory ability to move about office, classroom, and school grounds, to tutor, assist with presentations, and reach work materials.
- Requires sufficient manual and finger dexterity to demonstrate teaching aids, to point out important words/figures to students, and to operate personal computers.
- Requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and move supplies, fixtures, wheelchairs, etc., of light-to-medium weight (under 40 pounds).
- Under some circumstances, further testing may be required to determine if an applicant is able to perform the essential duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
