Summary:
Assists Supervisor/Manager with daily organization and supervision of work activities. Performs duties characteristic of a Medical Technologist. Provides technical assistance and training to staff. Facilitates communication between shifts, sections, and hospital departments. Ensures day to day operations are carried out by staff in a professional, service-focused manner. Assumes duties of Supervisor/Manager in his/her absence.
Minimum Qualifications:
Formal Education Required:
Education requirements are those of either a Medical Laboratory Technologist or Medical Laboratory Technician.
Technologist:
Formal Education Required (either A or B):
- A. Bachelor of Science degree listing one of the required areas of study (Biology, Chemistry, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science). If degree does not list area of study, transcripts must be submitted for equivalency evaluation. Acceptable transcripts must include:
- Sixty (60) semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution that includes either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination, OR
- One (1) year in approved program or equivalent with certification/registry with an accredited recognized agency or organization (e.g. ASCP, AMT, etc.).
- B. One (1) year clinical laboratory experience and categorical certification from ASCP BOR in area of experience.
Medical Lab Technician:
- a. Associate Degree in Laboratory Science from an accredited junior or community college including training in an approved program, or equivalent, with certification or eligibility with accredited recognized agency or organization (e.g., ASCP, AMT, etc.).
- b. Undergraduate degree in Science (biology, chemistry, nursing) and successful completion of medical laboratory technician trainee role.
Certifications:
-Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Lab Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or certification eligible from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT), preferred.
Experience & Training Required:
-Two (2) years related laboratory experience.
-Minimum of 12 continuing education credits are required to be completed each calendar year for continued employment.
Other Skills, Competencies and Qualifications:
- Demonstrates manual dexterity sufficient to operate and troubleshoot sophisticated equipment, identify, and correct technical problems.
-Ability to work under stress, communicate test results to physicians, nursing units, and/or other authorized personnel.
-Ability to operate a computer or acquire such skills.
-Population Specific Competency: Ability to effectively interact with populations of patients/customers with an understanding of their needs for self-respect and dignity.
-Demonstrates annual successful completion of all regulatory required testing related competencies.
Level of Physical Demands:
-Medium: Exerts 20-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or ten to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force continuously to move objects.
-2-6 hours of constant standing or walking. Can be 2-6 hours of intermittent sitting. Occasionally lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling up to 40 lbs. frequent bending/reaching/twisting, occasional squatting/kneeling.
