Overview:
A member of the NeuroPsychiatric Hospital family is looking for a Clinical Nurse Educator to integrate academic knowledge, evidence-based principles, and clinical nursing expertise into educational experiences for both new Nursing employees and experienced Nursing staff. The Clinical Nurse Educator will utilize strategies and tools to assess the competence of new nursing staff members, focusing on quality of care and patient safety goals. Class content includes not only didactic coursework but also hands-on clinical experience and lessons in professional responsibility. Contributes to quality and safety initiatives. The Educator is responsible for the development, management, and delivery of system-wide clinical education, including educational aspects related to nursing orientation, clinical in-service, and community education. The primary goal of this position is twofold: first, to improve patient care and outcomes including the patient experience through staff education, and second, to increase support to staff through the feedback and performance improvement process in partnership with the Director of Nursing. Functions as a source of clinical information for the facility. Functions under the supervision and direction of the Chief Nursing Officer.

Responsibilities:
- Research, develop, implement, promote, deliver, facilitate, document, and evaluate education programs using evidence-based approaches and frameworks that support the organization and facility goals, objectives, and regulatory standards; and also meet the ongoing educational needs of staff at each facility.
- Own the clinical orientation program for the hospital and ensure that staff are trained to the level needed to perform their jobs successfully.
- Collaborate with the Chief Clinical Officer, Vice President of Clinical Services, and other professionals to refine nursing education program content and create content as needed.
- Teach healthcare topics to unlicensed nursing staff as well as practicing nurses and act as an educational resource for all staff.
- Oversee and assist in the development of the Preceptor Program. This includes training of Preceptors for both licensed and unlicensed staff.
- Plan, implement, and oversee orientation programs and provide CPR and CPI training to all staff.
- Obtain and maintain BLS and CPI instructor certifications.
- Develop, revise, and utilize competency tools for ensuring nursing staff practice meets accepted professional standards while collaborating with Directors of Nursing, Vice President of Clinical Services, and Chief Nursing Officer to identify needs.
- Provide ongoing staff development, continuing education, skills, annual competency assessments, and lead local Skills Fair.
- Complete assessment of clinical staff using clinical competencies and other forms of knowledge testing.
- Collect data and information to validate an identified gap in professional practice and to determine the specific knowledge, skill, or practice deficit or opportunity needed. Investigate issues, trends, and supporting data to determine the needs of individuals, departments, and organizations.
- Complete concurrent and closed chart audits daily and as deemed necessary to determine quality of documentation, knowledge retention, and effectiveness of training. Communicate results of chart audits per protocol to determine staff needs.
- Provide one-on-one feedback as needed to support staff in their role. Hold follow-up meetings with new hires during their 90-day probationary period to determine the need for additional training, act as a mentor, offer support, and help ease the transition.
- Promote the generation and dissemination of new knowledge and use of evidence to guide clinical practice, improve patient care, and foster lifelong learning. Role model practices for creating and sustaining positive learning and practice environments.
- Assess learner characteristics, including learning styles and learning needs for program development. Create an effective learning environment, demonstrating proficiency in the use of technology. Evaluate the outcomes of staff education, functioning in the roles of both teacher and facilitator.
- Implement a variety of teaching strategies tailored to the learner’s characteristics, learning needs, cultural perspectives, and outcome objectives. Plan programs that are culturally relevant and that incorporate concepts of multicultural and multi-generational education.
- Advise in the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of materials, learning environments (i.e., virtual), and teaching strategies appropriate to the situation and learner’s developmental level, learning needs, readiness, ability to learn, and culture.
- Support the transition of nurses and other healthcare team members across learning and practice environments, roles, and professional stages. Mentor, guide, and support NPH clinical staff as applicable.
- Participate in health promotion and community development activities including public relations exercises for the hospitals.
- Support quality improvement initiatives and processes.
- Stay up to date with clinical trends and with nursing standards.
- Accountable for effective performance and follow-through of all assigned responsibilities, and for completing responsibilities within designated (or agreed upon) timeframes.
- Complete responsibilities in a manner consistent with organizational policies, goals, and values.
- Display concern and initiative. Be resourceful and calm in emergencies.

- Cooperate and maintain good rapport with nursing staff, medical staff, other departments, and visitors.
- Seek guidance and remain knowledgeable of, and comply with, all applicable federal and state laws, as well as hospital policies that apply to assigned duties.
- Comply with hospital expectations regarding ethical behavior and standards of conduct.
- Comply with federal and hospital requirements in the areas of protected health information and patient privacy.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Understand and adhere to NPH’s compliance standards as they appear in NPH’s Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct, and Conflict of Interest Policy.
- Keep abreast of all pertinent federal, state, and hospital regulations, laws, and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing required.
- Five years of nursing experience required. Must have experience in nursing education and psychiatric and/or acute care.
- RN in the state of hospital is required. BLS and CPI certification obtained during orientation.
- Excellent verbal communication skills necessary in order to instruct and comfort patients and their families.
- Maintain effective contacts with a variety of Hospital Personnel.
- Must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served on assigned unit/department.
