Duties/Responsibilities
- Review Medicare charts for appropriate documentation on every shift.
- Function as Charge Nurse and/or Medication Nurse as needed.
- Counsel team members with complaints or grievances and identify interventions.
- Assist the Director of Nursing in the creation of and compliance with the approved departmental budget.
- Collaborate with Security for the Smith Care Center fire drills. Complete necessary form and make two copies; copies go to the Life Safety Officer and the original will go to the Sr. VP of Health Services.
- Ensure compliance with all Federal and State health and safety regulations.
- Serve as a member of the inter-disciplinary team as directed by the Director of Nursing.
- Follow Universal Precautions and Infection Control procedures.
- Comply with Florida State statutes regarding required continuing education credits.
- Assist in the planning, development, organization, implementation, evaluation, and direction of assigned shifts’ activities.
- Attend change of shift report.
- Complete team member performance appraisals by the required date as assigned by the Director of Nursing.
- Assure that all necessary positions are present at the beginning of the nursing shift.
- Supervise Charge Nurses and Medication Nurses and assist when necessary.
- Assume responsibilities of Charge Nurse as requested by the Director of Nursing.
- Make daily rounds on all residents as requested by the Director of Nursing.
- Monitor that CNA's meet on a weekly basis to review Resident Care Plans.
- Assist the Resident Assessment Coordinator (RAC) with computer data as requested by the Director of Health Services.
- Meet with administrative, medical, and nursing staff, and related departments in planning departmental services, programs, and activities.
- Develop and maintain rapport with inter-departmental personnel.
- Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of nursing objectives and standards.
- Assist in the development, implementation, and coordination of departmental policies and procedures, Resident Care Plans, nursing procedure manuals, and job descriptions.
- Interpret departmental policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and resident representatives.
- Visit each resident at least once during a shift to assure appropriate care is being rendered and take action accordingly.
- Assist in identifying departmental problems and subsequent resolutions.
- Make recommendations to the Director of Nursing regarding staffing, improvement of services, and potential problems.
- Participate in discharge planning, development and implementation of Resident Care Plans and resident assessments.
- Perform administrative duties as required by departmental policies and procedures.
- Participate in departmental projects and studies as assigned.
- Identify the need for and conduct educational in-services for shift as needed.
- Coordinate Home Care services and Smith Care Center services as indicated.
- Inspect nursing care service areas and practices regularly to assure compliance with current applicable regulations.
- Complete recordkeeping forms according to departmental policies and procedures.
- Attend Quarterly Quality Assurance and Risk Management meetings to report on necessary nursing issues related to general nursing care and 3-11 shift.
- Assist in the evaluation and implementation of recommendations from the facility’s committees, e.g., the Patient Care Policy, Pharmacy, Infection Control, etc.
- Notify the resident’s attending/alternate physician, family, or representative of any change in condition according to established facility policy.
- In cases of death, implement arrangements according to residents’, family’s’, or representatives’ wishes and in compliance with facility policy.
- Evaluate emergencies, determine measures to be taken, and notify the nursing supervisor on call.
- Assist in the standardization of methods in which work will be accomplished.
- Notify physicians and resident representatives verbally of accidents/incidents according to facility policy.
- Collect laboratory specimens as ordered. Perform laboratory tests as ordered.
- Assist in establishing the administration, procedures, and control of medications, etc. as recommended by the pharmacist/Pharmacy Committee.
- Perform prescribed monitoring, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
- The RN Shift Supervisor has supervisory responsibility for maintaining compliance with the federal regulations and policies and procedures that govern the Smith Care Center.
- This position has supervisory responsibilities for maintaining the team integrity of LPNs, CNAs, and therapists.
Qualifications
- Must have valid license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Florida.
- Must have a current CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) certification.
- Associates degree (A.A.) in nursing from a two-year college or hospital school; or a bachelor’s degree (B.S.N.) in nursing from a four-year college or university.
- Minimum two years in the field of Long-Term Care and familiarization with State of Florida regulations (CMS) preferred.
- Must have good organizational skills.
- Must have excellent personal skills, demonstrating the ability to conduct oneself in a non-controversial style; a style that inspires the respect of others and promotes a sense of trust in the individual’s competence.
- Must be proficient with Microsoft Office programs with the ability to learn and use proprietary software as required.
