POSITION SUMMARY
The Licensed Practical Nurse participates in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care, within departmental objectives, standards, and policies. Provide safe medication and emergency and withdrawal management. Responsible for data collection, record keeping, able to effectively communicate patient concerns and work collaboratively with RN’s, medical and support personnel to provide care treatment and services to patient with substance use disorder. In that role, in addition to performing your regular job duties, you also serve as a role model and authority figure to our patients.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collects accurate data upon the patient's admission, during detoxification and during rehabilitation and documents accordingly. Develops appropriate treatment plans in collaboration with RN, Nursing Supervisor, or DON. Completes required documentation per policy. Knows how and when to report cases of abuse (sexual, physical, elder) and child neglect.
- Dispenses medication according to the 5 R's (right patient, right medication, right dose, right route, right time).
- Assures competency in the use of emergency and clinical equipment as evidenced by the proper use of Glucometer, Breathalyzer, Nebulizer, emergency response equipment and drugs.
- Assures competency in the management of the following emergency conditions: Chest pain, SOB/Dyspnea, Seizures, Hypo/Hyperglycemia.
- Assures knowledge of pain management as evidenced of ability to assess pain level utilizing pain scale, development of the treatment plan, explain comfort measures and reassesses per policy.
- Demonstrates ability to verbalize recommended script to negotiate a "contract for safety" with patients and also demonstrates understanding of Aggressive Person Management policy.
- Applies Development and Age-Related Knowledge in the Care of Patients.
- Demonstrates competency in applying development and age-related knowledge in the care of patients in the following age groups: Adolescent (18-19 years), Young Adult (20-39 years), Middle Adult (40-64 years), older adults age (65-74 years) and Geriatric (75 and older).
- Alert to opportunities to reduce risks of accidents or potential safety and security breaches. Routinely follows safety and security policies and procedures. Reports all safety related incidents in a timely and complete manner; completes accident and incident reports correctly. Participates in mandatory safety training sessions; participates in fire and disaster drills.

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Current Licensed as an LPN by the MD State Board of Nursing or compact state required.
- Active BLS certification required.
- One year of experience in acute care nursing required. Addiction or Psychiatric Nurse experience desirable.
- Ability to read medical documents, such as doctor's orders, psychological evaluations, and dietitian assessments and write routine reports. Communicate effectively with patients and staff.
- Use of Emergency and Clinical Equipment.
- Accurately measure medical dosages as prescribed by the Medical Staff. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office to include Outlook, Word and Excel, proficient use Electronic Medical Record.
- Common sense understanding to carry out detailed medical instructions. Be sensitive to the needs of chemically dependent patients. Deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Ability to be on feet a majority of the time. Must make rounds on premises as required. Occasional heavy lifting will be necessary in the event of patient crisis.
