MCRHC is a 25-bed critical access hospital, including a Level 4 Trauma Center Emergency Room seeing 3,200 visits annually. The Surgical Services department performs over 1,300 procedures annually, including specialties General Surgery, Orthopedics, ENT, Urology, Ophthalmology, Pain management, and Podiatry.

Position Summary:
The Clinic Registered Nurse is a professional nursing position that serves as a resource nurse providing quality patient care and is a patient advocate. The Specialty Clinic RN provides outpatient care to outreach clinics as directed and schedules surgeries as necessary. The Specialty Clinic RN will work as the coordinator of cardiac testing services and is responsible for directing, integrating, and coordinating nursing services for treadmill stress testing, nuclear stress testing, and stress echocardiograms at Mitchell County Regional Health Center. The Specialty Clinic RN provides nursing care to various specialties as requested in the Specialty Clinic. The Specialty Clinic RN position may perform all types of sleep disorder testing including set-up and performance of nocturnal polysomnograms (PSGs) on all select groups.
Shift: Days- Monday-Saturday. One Saturday a month.
Salary: $29.54 increases with experience.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Specialty Clinic Registered Nurse
- Provides nursing care for Mayo CVC Clinic and the Mason City Clinics and Mercy Heart and Vascular Institute for general surgery, ENT, urology, and OB/GYN clinic and helps to coordinate follow-up care/testing for all above clinics.
- Provides competent patient care to the above-indicated patient populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments.
- Obtain signatures (HIPAA and insurance) and obtain insurance info as needed.
- Has appropriate patient health information, i.e. lab tests and x-rays, etc., available for outreach specialty physicians prior to appointment.
- Escorts patient to exam room, obtains vital signs, height, and weight, obtains and documents subjective data such as chief complaint, medications, allergies, past histories, etc. Acts as a chaperone, and assists physicians as requested.
- Utilizes written policies and procedures and universal precautions when performing laboratory/diagnostic tests as ordered by provider. Reports all critical lab/diagnostic test values to the provider.
- Sets up and assists with clinical surgical procedures as needed.
- As a member of the infection control committee, fills out the infection control surveillance sheets as directed.
- Calls orders and refills to local pharmacies.
- Assists with work release issues.
- Works with Mason City Clinic staff on getting approvals for surgeries as necessary.
- Assists in scheduling patients for lab/diagnostic tests/referrals with centralized scheduler who will determine covered diagnosis and obtain pre-authorizations.
- Cardiac Stress Testing Services
- Collaborates with medical staff to develop, plan, implement, review, and revise policies, procedures, and guidelines for treadmill stress testing and all educational programs.
- Functions as staff nurse responsible for preparing and supervising patients performing treadmill stress testing and nuclear stress testing along with the physician monitor.
- Provides competent patient care to the above-indicated patient populations.
- Maintains medical records of services, documenting patient progress including critical events and resolution of these events.
- Recognizes and intervenes appropriately when potentially dangerous signs and symptoms occur with notification and referral to physician and accurate documentation of such.
- Sleep Lab Polysomnography Testing
- Collaborates with medical staff to develop, plan, implement, review and revise policies, procedures and guidelines for polysomnography testing.
- Functions as a staff nurse responsible for preparing and supervising patients undergoing polysomnography.
- Provides competent patient care to the above-indicated patient populations.
- Completes necessary documentation for polysomnography.
- Reviews orders, medications, medical history of pending sleep studies; assesses documentation, determines parameters to be monitored and communicates with ordering physician/Medical Director as necessary.
- Performs pre-test set-up/maintenance of equipment, supplies, and forms.
- Performs machine calibrations (CAP/BiPAP/bi-level, oximeter, PC date/time). Confirms that lab and patient rooms are clean and welcoming.
- Attempts to locate no-shows and to fill unexpected openings. Checks department Voice Mail messages.
- Provides pre-testing instruction and demonstration to patient. Answers all questions to patient's satisfaction.
- Assures accurate completion of all required forms, including: pre-and post-study questionnaires, sleep history, consent forms, Sleep Study Technologist Notes, patient evaluation.
- Applies monitoring equipment per standards and protocol.
- Performs sleep study per protocol and recognizes and corrects problems in a timely fashion. Contacts Mercy North Iowa sleep technicians and/or technical support as appropriate.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
- Education:
- Graduate of a school of nursing is required.
- A current Iowa License as a Registered Nurse is required.
- BCLS and ACLS certification required.
- Experience:
- 3-year clinical experience in an acute care setting with critical care experience preferred.
- Surgical background preferred.
- Ideal candidate will have knowledge of the surgical process and normal postoperative courses of surgical patients.
- Special Skills and Aptitudes:
- Knowledge of stress testing principles and guidelines including stress echocardiograms and nuclear medicine stress testing procedures or willing to train.
- Advanced knowledge of interpreting cardiac arrhythmias and recognizing ischemic changes on EKG or willing to train.
- Knowledge of cardiac pathophysiology, pharmacology, disease process, and current treatment plans.
- Knowledge and use of specialized equipment (cardiac monitors, treadmill, defibrillator, and accessories) or willing to train.
- Strong communication skills and independent decision-making skills.
