The Radiology Technologist Supervisor provides day-to-day supervision for an assigned Radiology area (e.g. Diagnostic, Breast Imaging, Stony Point, CT/MRI, 3D lab) to include STAR Service, legal and regulatory compliance, clinical operations, human resources, safety & quality, customer service, leadership, and fiscal responsibility.
The Radiology Technologist Supervisor ensures that all diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are performed by qualified and competent staff, are of the highest quality achievable and follow the radiation safety principles of ALARA, ACR Guidelines for imaging practices, and ACR Guidelines for MRI Safety, if applicable. Ensure compliance with VCU and VCUHS policies and procedures.
The Radiology Technologist Supervisor works directly with lead technologists and front line staff to solve problems and reduce barriers to success. This job works within the Scope of Practice of his/her specialty. The scope of Practice by specialty is described in the Staff Technologist job description for each specialty. This job also maintains technical competency in all areas of responsibility.
The Radiology Technologist Supervisor implements new initiatives, programs and policies. Work collaboratively with other Radiology Supervisors, Managers, Faculty and staff to ensure a high level of departmental safety, quality, and teamwork. Report to the Modality Manager and is responsible for the clinical functions and processes for the assigned Radiology area. Through lead technologists and staff, the Radiology Supervisor is responsible and accountable for the daily clinical operation of the assigned sections by ensuring the highest level of operational excellence while ensuring safety, efficient, high quality and cost effective care. This job supervises, oversees, maintains and improves business functions and processes related to his/her areas of responsibility. Develop staff education and competencies including educational materials, competency forms, etc. This job also provides education to assigned team, students, residents, and other learners.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
Certification by the American Registry of Radiology Technologist (ARRT) required for Diagnostic Supervisor. Plus one of the following specialty registries that is directly related to their department: ARRT in Mammography for Breast Imaging Supervisor, ARRT CT for CT Supervisor, ARRT MRI for MRI Supervisor, ARRT CV or VIR for Interventional Supervisor, ARRT CT or MRI required for 3D lab supervisor, (CI) Cardiac Interventional Radiography, (RCIS) Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist, (RCES) Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist.
Experience REQUIRED:
Minimum of one (1) year of Lead Tech radiologic technology experience.
Minimum of three (3) years of technical experience.
Experience PREFERRED:
Experience performing in a leadership role. Previous work experience in an academic medical center environment.
Education/training REQUIRED:
Graduation from a JRC Accredited Program in Radiologic Technology that is recognized by the ARRT.
Education/training PREFERRED:
Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Radiation Science, Business, or closely related field from an accredited program is strongly preferred. Master’s Degree in Health Administration, Business Administration or closely related field from an accredited program is preferred.
Independent action(s) required:
All day to day workflow coordination and team supervision. Advice and guidance sought from Manager on an as needed situational basis and when there is a major impact on activity of the modality.
Supervisory responsibilities:
All team members in assigned modality report to this position; day to day workflow responsibilities may be delegated as appropriate. Supervisors are expected to cover unplanned absences for staff that may occur on any shift, as needed.
Additional position requirements:
Weekend and other after hours coverage may be required based on workload demand and teaming needs.
