Position Summary
The Registered Dietitian (RD) III is an expert level position that reflects a specialized level of practice reinforced with two or more Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), Commission for Dietetic Registration, American Society for Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition (ASPEN) or other conferred specialty certification or demonstrated expertise within an assigned population. The RD III is responsible for collaborating with members of the health care team to provide patients medical nutrition therapy (MNT) using current, scientific literature and best practices. Utilizing the Nutrition Care Process, the RD III performs nutrition assessment, diagnoses nutrition-related problems, determines and implements appropriate interventions, monitors and evaluates the outcome of interventions. The RD III provides nutrition education to patients, caregivers, and family members as needed. He/she leads and/or actively participates in performance improvement activities and/or research projects. In addition, the RD III assists with community education, interdisciplinary patient rounds, teaching the bariatric class, partnership councils, the Nutrition Support Team, administrative and other related duties as assigned. The RD III acts as a mentor to level I and level II RDs and the Diet Office/Hostess Staff. The RD III is a recognized leader within the hospital, nutrition community and serves as a community mentor and resource.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job
- Applies expertise in normal and therapeutic nutrition, medical terminology and abbreviations; nutritional assessment and care planning; nutrition counseling and verbal and written communication as documented in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Completes nutrition assessments on all patients nutritional risks levels and enter all pertinent data (clinical notes, acuity, follow-up, etc) into the EMR.
- Provides nutritional counseling to all patients on medical nutrition therapy as per scientific literature and best practices.
- Assists with monthly PI projects by gathering data and generating reports.
- Effectively communicates verbally and in writing in English.
- Provides excellent customer service to ensure patients’ needs are met.
- Communicates effectively with the Physicians and ancillary staff to implement nutrition recommendations and improve patient services.
- Demonstrates the ability to apply infection control policies/procedures for safe food handling.
- Acts as a mentor to level I and level II RDs and the Diet Office/Hostess Staff by assisting with in-services and guidance as needed.
- Demonstrates ability to contribute as a team member to complete tasks, resolve problems and achieve department goals.

*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. In addition to base pay, there may be additional compensation available for this role, including but not limited to, shift differentials, extra shift incentives, and bonus opportunities. Qualifications/Work Experience:
- 3-5 years in an acute care hospital setting preferred.
- Experience as a clinical dietitian to support Specialty Certification.
Education/Licensure/Certification:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Dietetics or Food and Nutrition from an accredited college or university. Master’s Degree in Nutrition or allied health profession preferred.
- Completion of an AND approved dietetic internship or advanced degree with AND qualifying experience.
- Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) credential.
- Two or more Specialty Certifications required:
- Certified Nutrition Support Clinician (CNSC), Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE), Sweet Success, Certified Specialist in Oncology Nutrition (CSO), Certificate of Training in Obesity Interventions for Adults from the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), Certified Specialist in Renal Nutrition (CSR), Certified Specialist in Gerontological Nutrition (CSG), International Board Certified Lactation, Consultant (IBCLC), ServSafe, Certificate and California Children Services (CCS).
