The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation. DHS operates as an integrated health system, operating 25 health centers and four acute care hospitals, in addition to providing health care to youth in the juvenile justice system and inmates in the LA County jails.

DEFINITION:Plans, fabricates, improvises, applies, assesses, adjusts, modifies, and removes orthopedic devices necessary for the treatment of patients.
- Receives and studies written orders from physicians for orthopedic work.
- Plans best method and selects proper orthopedic devices and equipment using as a guide the physician's order which describes the patient's condition, an orthopedic manual and/or standard practice.
- Fabricates, improvises, applies, adjusts, and removes orthopedic devices.
- Explains procedures to and instructs patients and their families in the care of casts, strappings, dressings.
- Reassures patients when removing casts with cast cutters or other such devices.
- Assists physicians in applying more specialized orthopedic devices such as hip spicas and cast braces.
- Assists physicians in emergency areas by applying casts, tractions and splints, often of a temporary nature.
- Prepares the patients' permanent orthopedic records, listing the type of procedures applied.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:Completion of a training program in orthopedic work in an approved hospital -OR- six months' of experience in a hospital orthopedic department applying and removing casts, tractions, splints and strappings.
PHYSICAL CLASS III - Moderate:Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
Special Requirement Information:Applicants who expect to qualify through the completion of an orthopedic training program MUST attach a legible copy of that training program certificate of completion at the time of filing or within 15 calendar days of filing online.
Examination Content:This examination will consist of an interview covering training, experience, personal fitness and general ability to perform the duties of the position weighted 100%. Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher in the examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.

Eligibility Information:Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.
The names of candidates receiving a passing grade on the examination will be added to the Eligible Register and will appear in the order of their score group for a period of six (6) months following the date of eligibility.
No person may compete in this examination more than once every six (6) months.Special Information:Applicants may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
Vacancy Information:The resulting eligible register from this examination will be used to fill vacancies throughout the Department of Health Services as they occur.
