Job Summary:
The Laboratory Assistant at UCSF Neuroscience laboratory in the Department of Ophthalmology focuses on understanding retinal and central processing deficits in eye disease and neurological disorders.
The Lab Assistant 1 will work closely with laboratory members in various aspects of research, including assistance with ordering supplies, maintaining laboratory inventory, and ensuring smooth laboratory operations. This individual will maintain records related to equipment, supplies, and lab compliance with regulatory agencies. Under supervision, they will assist with data collection and research as directed by Specialists and postdoctoral fellows.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on various factors including work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For represented positions, placement within the salary range will be guided by the collective bargaining agreement.
Salary Range: $19.43 - $22.49 (Hourly Rate)

Department Description:
The UCSF Department of Ophthalmology is a leading department in clinical care, training, and research nationwide. The Department is one of the largest recipients of federal grant funds among peer departments and has consistently ranked in the top 10 for NIH funding. We have been the #1 recipient of Research to Prevent Blindness funding nationwide, with nearly $1.2 million granted in a single year. The Department supports 40 full-time clinical faculty, 12 basic scientists, and numerous postdoctoral scholars and interns.
Required Qualifications:
- Graduation from high school or GED Diploma and one year of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical, or social sciences, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a science-related field
- Ability to work independently and/or as part of a diverse team
- Ability to recognize irregularities and invalid results
- Ability to modify existing procedures and standardize new procedures
- Excellent verbal and oral communication skills
- Detail-oriented
- Knowledge of experimental processes and protocols
- Excellent organizational skills
- Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office
- Excellent time management skills
- Knowledge of animal behavior and care
- Knowledge of basic laboratory procedures
- Familiarity with UCSF IACUC protocols
