POSITION SUMMARY
The Nurse Manager is accountable for the management and leadership of a specific nursing unit. This position evaluates available resources and delegates appropriately to assure quality outcomes of care. They also direct and implement the nursing process, including systematic data collection, assessment, development of care plans, implementation of care plans, and revision of plans. The Nurse Manager manages and supervises the care of residents through a well-defined care delivery system.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
RESPONSIBILITY: To Facilitate the Comprehensive Care Planning Process
- Systematically collects data utilizing the MDS about residents through interviews with residents and families, observation, discussion with physicians, and review of medical records.
- Assesses residents and applies knowledge to facilitate the best therapeutic plan of care.
- Assists in the development of care plans using the CAAS in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
- Implements care plans by assigning responsibility, developing communication systems, and following up on outcomes.
- Attends care conferences to meet the needs of the resident and family.
- Monitors any change of condition and revises the plan of care to reflect the current resident status.
- Assists and completes assessments, supervising the completion of functional care plans by other nursing personnel.
RESPONSIBILITY: Knowledge of and Application of Established Nursing Policies and Procedures
- Knowledgeable of and abides by the residents’ Bill of Rights.
- Uses standards of care and specific policies to perform nursing care procedures for residents.
- Encourages autonomous decision-making by residents whenever possible.
- Promotes the Continuous Quality Improvement program of the Rehabilitation Center.
- Involved in making recommendations and changes to nursing administration that affect care given to residents.
- Attends in-service and reviews literature to maintain skills in gerontological nursing.
- Draws lab or delegates this as appropriate.
RESPONSIBILITY: Supervises and Manages Nursing Staff
- Articulates expectations and delegates appropriate job duties to subordinates.
- Follows up on directives given to subordinates and assures completion of duties.
- Completes performance appraisals as delegated by the DON.
- Assesses knowledge and skill of nursing personnel to assure safe practice.
- Corrects unprofessional behavior among staff.
- Prioritizes and updates work assignments based on staffing levels and resident care needs.
- Takes necessary steps to replace nursing staff to maintain proper staffing levels.
- Knows and can implement fire, tornado, and disaster plans.
- Works designated weekends and takes call as directed by the DON.
RESPONSIBILITY: Follows Standards of Documentation and Communication
- Completes charting in accordance with health information standards and facility policy.
- Systematically collects and communicates resident assessment data.
- Documents data on admissions and discharges.
- Facilitates physician orders and ensures accurate follow-up.
- Initiates reports and documents nursing orders.
- Provides report to CNA’s and other staff about daily resident care needs.
- Follows up on documented recommendations of the dietitian.
RESPONSIBILITY: Complies with Pharmaceutical Policies
- Administers medications accurately according to policy.
- Maintains a 95% error-free medication administration rate.
- Signs out medications according to policy.
- Reviews medication and treatment sheets monthly.
- Follows proper procedures for label changes and emergency kit procedures.
- Complies with controlled substance policies.
- Destroys controlled medications with a pharmacist and non-legend drugs with the DON.
FACILITY COMPLIANCE
- Promotes a positive workplace centered on customer service and inclusivity.
- Maintains current license and keeps updated.
- Attends continuing education pertinent to the department.
- Participates in safety and infection control education programs.
- Maintains current knowledge of Minnesota Department of Health regulations.
- Identifies areas of need through surveys and communicates these at QA&A Committee meetings.
- Ability and willingness to work some evenings and weekends as directed by supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse in the State of Minnesota.
- Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and emergency care for healthcare providers.
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing when directing resident care.
- Ability to perform essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must qualify for employment after a criminal background study.
Preferred
- Experience in healthcare, skilled nursing facility, or assisted living community.
- Bachelor of Science Nursing Degree.
