Duty Station: Lacey, Washington – Thurston County
Embrace this leadership role through directing a team of construction professionals in the inspection and repair of agency assets, delivering technical and professional engineering, construction, and maintenance to sustain facilities, infrastructure, and ecosystems under the Department’s care.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, this position will:
Project Leadership
- Assist in the preparation, scheduling, and supervision of the work layout for the maintenance, alteration, and repair of building structures and components.
- Oversee the execution of the work, ensuring quality, production, and safety, by ensuring that the Crew works to job specifications and follows all Agency standards.
- Continuously inspect completed work to ensure it is up to code and specifications, initiating timely problem resolutions.
- Use computerized maintenance systems to track work requested, enter work completion remarks, corrective adjustments, and other relevant information.
- Independently construct and perform major repairs and remodels to buildings, sheds, bridge abutments, handrails, and various other structures from specifications, plans, sketches, or instructions.
- Replace interior and exterior doors and windows.
- Assess the conditions of various facilities at hatcheries statewide, including residences, offices, incubation, and feed storage buildings.
- Identify structural deficiencies and issues that could pose harm to human safety.
- Make recommendations for repairs to roofs, flooring and decks, fences, and framework.
Plumbing
- Repair or replace pressured residential and commercial water delivery lines and drainpipes. Install water heaters, both gas and electric.
- Disassemble and replace manifolds, valves, pipe, and fittings. Cut pipe, plate, and other materials.
- Assess the conditions of residential and commercial plumbing components at hatchery facilities statewide, including exercising valves and inspecting supply lines for potential failures.
- Document and make recommendations for repairs or replacements of components.
Mechanical and Metal Fabrication
- Assist in servicing electric and diesel-drive water and trash pumps.
- Independently service and provide diagnostic functions on crowders, rotating belt screens, electronic rolling doors, winches, and predation structures.
- Layout, cut, assemble, and weld standalone covers to protect electrical components from environmental elements.
Electrical Preventative Maintenance
- Inspect and assess the conditions of basic electrical components and perform minor repairs. Make recommendations for larger scale repairs requiring a licensed electrician.
- Inspect and assess the need to replace switches and outlets, exhaust fans, breakers, and lighting fixtures.
- Install lighting circuits.
- Assist with the diagnosis of minor electrical issues.
Working Conditions
Work setting: Duties are performed at construction sites on hatchery and wildlife areas and occasionally in a fabrication shop. Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
Schedule: Typically, Monday – Thursday, 6:00 AM – 4:30 PM. Work overtime as needed/requested, which may include overnight stays and evening and weekend work.
Travel requirements: Travel could vary between 60-80% depending on the season.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications:
One (1) of the following:
- Two years as a Maintenance Mechanic 3.
- Three (3) years as a Maintenance Mechanic 2.
- Four (4) years of journey-level experience in two (2) or more of the construction or building trades. Vocational training up to two (2) years may be substituted for this experience.
And
Two (2) years of experience leading the activities of other construction trades.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Basic skills in carpentry, maintenance, welding, and equipment operations.
Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in construction maintenance.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints and sketches.
License: Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:
- Extensive knowledge of the components used to rear fish and how they function, such as water supply lines and associated valves, water intake structures, and the pumps used to move water, etc.
