The Maritime Aquarium
The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk is seeking a part-time Field Research Technician to join the Department of Conservation and Policy. The mission of the Aquarium is to ignite a connection to Long Island Sound and the ocean to enrich the lives of all people and inspire action to protect our blue planet.
Position Overview
This position will support the Lobster Trap Recovery and Assessment Partnership, a collaborative effort that utilizes grappling gear to retrieve, study, and appropriately dispose of lost or abandoned lobster traps from the bottom of Long Island Sound.
Primary Responsibilities
- Conduct field research and data collection onboard commercial fishing vessel.
- Assist with grapple hook system deployment and retrieval from the boat.
- Assist with lobster trap hauling and tagging.
- Assist with data collection and recording.
- Assist the research team with moving heavy gear for execution of the project.
Schedule and Logistics
- The work schedule will be highly variable from week to week (not to exceed 30 hours).
- Boat trips will be scheduled 1-2 weeks in advance, typically for 6-10 hours beginning at 8am.
- Most boat trips are expected to leave from Greenwich, New Haven, and New London areas.
- The Technician must be able to provide their own transportation to the vessel; reimbursement for mileage in excess of a commute to The Maritime Aquarium may be provided.
- Trips are carried out depending on the weather forecast and may be canceled with little notice if conditions are deemed too hazardous.
- The Technician will be paid based on hours worked, and compensation will not be provided in the event of cancellations due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
Qualifications
- All applicants must be at least 18 years of age or older to apply.
- Prior experience working on boats strongly preferred.
- Must be comfortable working outside in all weather conditions.
- Must be able to work collaboratively and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
- Must be able to carry 50+ pounds onboard a boat and over uneven terrain.
- Knowledge of Long Island Sound species and habitats a plus.
