The UC Irvine School of Medicine Department of Physiology & Biophysics is dedicated to conducting innovative, cutting-edge research, engaging in high-level service and providing excellent educational opportunities and mentoring to students, postdoctoral fellows and residents in the discipline of physiology and biophysics.
Your Role on the TeamThe Wagar lab is seeking a staff research associate to join us and contribute to our efforts to accelerate vaccine design. This is a long-term position for a lab manager role in the lab. Responsibilities will include assisting other lab members with experiments, contributing to tissue collection efforts, maintaining lab compliance with safety and ethics reviews, and general lab maintenance duties. Although experience in a research lab environment is helpful, we are also happy to train an eager, motivated individual who wants to gain experience. The incumbent will learn a variety of cutting-edge immunological techniques, work closely with our lively team of postdocs and grad students, and participate in lab discussions about data interpretation, project planning, grant writing, and organization. The lab is highly collaborative and there will be numerous opportunities to interact with other research groups and contribute to publications. The Wagar lab has membership in the Vaccine R&D Center, Institute for Immunology, Center for Virus Research, and the Cancer Research Institute. What It Takes to be SuccessfulRequired:
- Organizational skills, including maintenance of records for purchasing, equipment maintenance, participant information, and experiments
- Ability to prioritize tasks, including good judgement for when to complete tasks independently vs. asking for guidance from colleagues
- Strong communication skills, such as the ability to explain project goals at different levels of complexity, generating and presenting reports and slides, and contacting vendors for quotes and negotiating prices
- Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and bachelor's degree in a biomedical-related discipline
Preferred:
- Familiarity with cell culture techniques, including working with BSL2 agents
Special Conditions:
- Occasional irregular work schedule
- Ability to travel between local hospital and UCI campus (2.5 miles; most expedient by motor vehicle)
