Basic Purpose
Positions in this job family are involved in providing direct care and supervision to clients with developmental or other disabilities. This includes basic health care and assistance with health care needs, assisting clients with life skills, reviewing treatment plans for appropriateness, and supervising implementation of care and treatment plans.
Typical Functions
- Performs routine duties in the care, custody, education, and treatment of developmentally disabled clients.
- Responds to emergencies affecting individuals, including administering CPR and using approved intervention techniques.
- Provides paraprofessional guidance and counseling to clients to help find solutions to their personal problems.
- Serves on a treatment team to review resident’s progress and treatment plans.
- Provides active treatment programming to clients in life skills.
- Ensures cleanliness of facilities through inspections and adherence to safety standards.
- Lifts individuals to and from wheelchairs or beds; may perform nonprofessional nursing aide duties.
- Supervises residents during activities and appointments.
- Assists teaching staff in classroom activities.
- Performs various clerical duties as needed.
Level Descriptor
Level I - Responsible for performing routine entry level work in a training status to build skills in providing resident supervision and direct care. Level II - Assigned duties at the full-performance level involving direct care, treatment, and supervision of residents/clients.
Education and Experience
Level I - High school diploma or equivalent. Level II - High school diploma or equivalent and one year of experience working with children or adults in a treatment facility.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
Level I - Knowledge of basic human physical and psychological needs, health and safety precautions, and crisis intervention techniques. Level II - Knowledge of behavior problems associated with clients with developmental disabilities.
Special Requirements
Some positions may require physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and willingness to work overtime and shifts. Some positions may require a valid driver’s license.
Additional Job Description
Position may be filled at Level I or II.
Position is located at Oklahoma School for the Blind (OSB) in Muskogee.
Essential Functions: Assist teachers and students in daily classroom activities, provide direct care to students who are blind/visually impaired, and maintain a clean work area.
Applicant must be willing to perform all job-related travel.
Background Check:
The Department of Rehabilitation Services will conduct a criminal background check as part of an offer of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Valid Oklahoma Driver’s License.
