JOB DESCRIPTION:
Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) Department of Medicine is recruiting a Research Assistant for the Greater Boston COVID-19 Recovery Cohort (BCRC). The BCRC is comprised of patients cared for at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH), Boston Medical Center (BMC), Tufts Medical Center (TMC), and Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA), and their affiliated community hospitals and health centers. The incumbent will be essential to the research operations of the BWH BCRC and will be an integral member of the greater Boston team. Boston experienced an early surge of COVID-19 cases beginning March 2020, which disproportionately impacted communities with socioeconomic and systemic inequities, including a large proportion of Black and Hispanic patients cared for at our centers. The BCRC harnesses extraordinary clinical infrastructure, extensive biorepositories, and deep community engagement at the six major academic health centers serving Eastern Massachusetts who have cared for inpatients and outpatients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. The Research Assistant will work directly with the BWH Project Coordinator and Project Director, as well as numerous other faculty and staff members.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Working in concert with Project Coordinator and Project Director, develops and implements patient recruitment strategies.
- Screens and recruits potential study patients. Per protocol, consents patient and schedules study visit. May be required to perform clinical tests such as phlebotomy, EKGs, etc.
- Maintains contact with study participants and coordinates study visits to obtain protocol required tests/procedures.
- Answers any phone calls and inquiries regarding study protocol. Refers participants when appropriate to supervisor or clinical staff.
- Develops, organizes, and/or maintains detailed clinical and research databases. May use programs such as Excel and REDCap.
- Responsible for collecting data and maintaining patient information database for study. May be required to input data, do basic data analysis and run various reports. Maintains patients’ records as part of record keeping function.
- Assisting with collection of regulatory documents for clinical studies and maintaining regulatory binder.
- Recommends changes to research protocols and manages modifications to institutional review board protocols.
- Performs literature searches, as appropriate.
- Assists PI or Project Director with preparation for presentation and written published articles.
- Orders lab supplies and equipment as necessary.
- Maintains collaborative, team relationships with peers and colleagues. Attends meetings as required.
- All other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
This position requires a Bachelor’s degree with strong academic performance and a demonstrated background in research. We are seeking a good-natured and high-spirited team player who gets along well with others from diverse intellectual and social backgrounds. A strong quantitative background and good communication skills (both written and oral) are important and some prior research experience is desired. No knowledge of clinical medicine is necessary; we will provide necessary teaching. We value flexibility, initiative, and independence as well as interest in medicine, epidemiology, health policy, biostatistics, and/or economics. All BCRC study materials will be translated into Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian-Creole, and Mandarin. Bilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
