Job Summary:
The Division of Pediatric Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah School of Medicine has an immediate opening for a Clinical Nurse. The Clinical Nurse will be responsible for providing nursing care to patients in the Sleep Center, including implementing clinical nursing interventions to modify symptoms, developing and implementing patient care plans to improve outcomes, providing and overseeing direct patient care, and will be involved in phone triage care.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate management with patients’ parents, chart review, care coordination, triage, and problem management.
- Assist in the pediatric pulmonary and sleep disorders clinics coordinating care and providing patient education relevant to their pulmonary diagnoses.
- Educate parents and families on health care and specific pulmonary diagnoses, including aspects of asthma management, nutrition, normal sleep and pediatric sleep disorders.
- Communicate pulmonary/sleep disorders management plans to services such as Otolaryngology, Gastroenterology and Rehabilitation Medicine.
- Identify, assess, and diagnose problems through patient assessment and interactions; evaluate actual or potential patient health problems.
- Assess, plan, and implement interventions for solving patient care problems.
- Formulate care plans for specific patients and document the nursing process in the patient’s record.
- Evaluate patient response to interventions and modify the plan of care as needed.
- Develop and participate in educating patients and their families about post-discharge care programs.
- Initiate patient care meetings with the health care team to revise the plan of care as necessary.
- Communicate lab & other test results to families.
- Provide medication refills.
- Assist providers and staff with patient-related paperwork.
- Maintain a safe and therapeutic patient care environment.
- Provide guidance and direction to members of the health care team to ensure quality patient care.
- Stay up-to-date on advances in nursing care by participating in educational programs.
- Orient and educate new staff in nursing techniques and departmental procedures.
- Provide and oversee direct patient care in accordance with established nursing protocol and physicians’ orders.
- Utilize knowledge of medications, procedures, infection control, and safety precautions.
- Participate in total quality management to positively affect patient and system outcomes.
Minimum Qualifications:
Required:
- Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system.
- Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah, or obtain one within 90 days of hire.
Preferred:
- Some positions may require additional certifications such as ACLS, PALS, or NRP within one year of hire.
Preferences:
- Prior experience working with pediatrics and/or sleep medicine patients is preferred.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills are essential.
- Computer skills and proficiency with Excel, Word, Outlook, Internet Explorer, and electronic medical records.
