Position SummaryThe Supervisor, Microbiology Laboratory plays a vital role in maintaining the quality and safety of Empower Pharmacy’s products by overseeing the day-to-day operations of the microbiology lab. This position is integral to ensuring timely, accurate microbiological testing and compliance with regulatory requirements, aligning with Empower's core values of people, service, quality, and innovation. The supervisor leads the team in delivering key lab results that directly support the production and release of pharmaceutical products.
This role is responsible for managing the microbiology lab personnel and ensuring the successful execution of critical laboratory activities, such as environmental monitoring, sample testing, and method validations. The Supervisor also plays a key role in addressing complex investigations, including Out of Specification results, and implementing appropriate corrective actions. By overseeing the use of essential microbiology technologies like sterility test equipment and endotoxin testing instruments, the Supervisor ensures that operations adhere to industry best practices and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards.
In addition to leading lab operations, the Supervisor collaborates closely with cross-functional teams in Quality Assurance (QA), Manufacturing, and Regulatory Affairs to facilitate the release of products that meet Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) standards. This role is also responsible for developing and mentoring the microbiology team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and accountability while maintaining strict adherence to safety and hygiene regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities- Supervises the microbiology laboratory and personnel, managing day-to-day activities to meet critical deliverables and timelines.
- Supports complex laboratory investigations (Out of Specification) on root causes and implementation of proper actions.
- Supports the implementation and operation of microbiology lab technologies, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
- Supports environmental monitoring of classified aseptic production rooms by managing sample incubation, results readout, results reporting, and review of data.
- Supervises the development of raw materials and finished product specifications and testing methods and supports QA in Certificate of Analysis (COA) issuance and product release.
- Oversees microbiology-related projects such as method transfers, method development, validations, and investigations, while also supporting and implementing continuous improvement initiatives.
- Manages team to ensure products meet cGMP COA specifications for identity, purity, strength, and safety.
- Collaborates cross-functionally with QA, Manufacturing, and Regulatory Affairs to support product release and investigation activities.
- Provides guidance, feedback, and direction to the microbiology team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Adheres to personal hygiene, garbing and Personal Protective Equipment standards per United States Pharmacopeia regulations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience and Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biology, Biochemistry, or related field required, Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a microbiology laboratory required.
- Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience preferred.
- Thorough experience with compendial testing: United States Pharmacopeia, and regulatory requirements (Food and Drug Administration and cGMP) required.
