Advanced Practice Practitioner (APP)-Internal Medicine
JOB SUMMARY:
Provide team-based primary care at a MAHEC practice by assessing, diagnosing and treating acute, episodic, medical or mental health conditions, independently or as part of a healthcare team. Work as a team with RNs and PharmDs providing Annual Wellness Visits. This position may include faculty responsibilities teaching or precepting various residents.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide direct patient care to patients.
- Order, perform, or interpret the results of diagnostic tests, such as laboratory tests, electrocardiograms (EKGs), and radiographs (x-rays).
- Analyze and interpret patients' histories, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses.
- Develop treatment plans based on best practices and professional practice guidelines.
- Diagnose or treat acute health care problems such as illnesses, infections, or injuries.
- Prescribe medications based on efficacy, safety, and cost as legally authorized.
- Counsel patients about drug regimens and possible side effects or interactions with other substances such as food supplements, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, or herbal remedies.
- Administer in-office medications and infusions as indicated.
- Provide patient referrals for diagnostic testing or specialist consultation as clinically indicated.
- Detect and respond to adverse drug reactions.
- Provide patient-centered education.
- Work as part of an Interprofessional team to provide patient-centered care.
- Complete documentation and clinical inbox reconciliation within organizational guidelines.
- Provide coverage for colleagues, including clinical inbox and patient schedule as needed.
- Participate in and may lead clinic quality improvement initiatives.
- Responsible for completing documentation and referrals according to payor and ACO quality requirements.

SPECIFIED SKILLS
- FOREIGN LANGUAGE: Spanish speaking skills preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Physical Demands: Light - Moderate energy level: Lift and carry 25 - 35 lbs, Push/Pull 50 - 100 lbs (empty bed, stretcher, etc.)
- Physical Activity: Frequent (34 - 66% of Workday)
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: NP / PA-C experience or two (2) years of experience practicing in an ambulatory primary care setting.
- PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Clinical practice in an urgent care or acute care setting preferred.
REQUIRED LICENSES:
- Current North Carolina Registered Nurse (RN) license required or Physician Assistant License.
- NCBME or eligibility for legal approval required.
SCHEDULE:
Regular attendance on-site is an essential function of this position. Typical business hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm (or flexed to best meet the needs of the clients and/or the Division); 40 hours per workweek; weekend, holiday, or evening coverage is occasionally required.
