The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) is under the supervision of the Director of Surgical Services, Nurse Manager, and Surgeon.
The RNFA is a perioperative nurse who functions as an assistant to the Surgeon in the OR during surgical procedures.
The RNFA performs assistant duties for the Surgeon in the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative periods according to standardized hospital policies. The RNFA provides leadership, working cooperatively with ancillary, nursing, and other patient team personnel in maintaining standards for nursing practice in the surgical setting.
In addition to assisting, responsibilities may include circulating, scrubbing, and other duties. Care is provided to pediatric through geriatric patient populations. Acts in the absence of a physician.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Current AHA certifications
- Three years of experience in an acute OR setting
- Certified in Perioperative Nursing (CNOR)
- Successful completion of NLN/BRN approved course in surgical first assisting
