Description:
The Obstetric and Gynecology physician provides health assessment and direct care to obstetric and gynecology patients as part of the provider team providing services to VNA Health Center patients.
Primary Functions:
- Understands and follows VNA’s “Mission Statement”, “Code of Ethics”, organizational policies, and structure.
- Provides general primary obstetric and gynecological care using generally accepted standards of practice. The physician develops a plan of care for each patient, including complete history, physical examination, diagnosis, appropriate treatment and/or referral, using all available resources in an appropriate and cost-efficient manner.
- Hospitalizes as needed any patient requiring in-patient care. Provides obstetric and gynecological care according to accepted ACOG standards during the hospitalization.
- Confers with consulting physicians, mid-level providers, nurses, support staff, patients, and families concerning treatment and care of patients. Makes appropriate specialty and sub-specialty referrals, but maintains responsibility, assuring continuity of care.
- Performs general gynecological and obstetric surgical procedures, both diagnostic and therapeutic, using both minimally invasive and traditional surgical techniques.
- Performs colposcopies and LEEPs as office and inpatient procedures as appropriate.
- Conforms to Family Planning requirements and agrees to provide all methods of birth control including IUDs and the “morning after pill.”
- Provides tubal ligations at the request of patients, at legally permitted age, following thorough explanation and documentation of risks and benefits. Performs circumcisions. Physician will not perform elective abortions or forcep deliveries.
- Enters into Collaborative agreements with VNA mid-level providers including midwives.
- Participates in regular call coverage.
- Participates in health promotion/disease prevention activities. Stresses the importance of preventive health care measures.
- Supports mid-level providers in supervision and consultation.
- Participates in quality improvement/assurance activities.
Qualifications:
- Unencumbered license to practice medicine in Illinois as an MD/DO.
- Completion of Accredited OB/Gyn Residency Program.
- Board Certified or Board Eligible in OB/GYN. If Board Eligible, be in the process of attaining Board Certification.
- Qualified in Basic Life Support.

Essential Functions/Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to speak English clearly and fluently.
- Must be able to read and interpret clinical data.
- Must have mobility sufficient to provide care to a variety of patients at an adequate pace.
- Must have manual dexterity sufficient to perform procedures usually performed in this specialty.
- Ability to drive a car.
