Overview:
The Lead Radiation Therapist is responsible for ensuring quality radiation therapy is consistently and accurately delivered as instructed by Dosimetrists, Chief Medical Physicist, and Physician. S/he oversees the workflow and adjustments as needed to ensure patient care is not disrupted. The Lead Radiation Therapist functions as a part of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure continuity of care and serves as a technical advisor to other members of the multidisciplinary team and the Radiation Therapist. The Lead Therapist supervises other radiation therapists.
Responsibilities:
Patient Care:
- Simulates patients using 3-D CT technology, constructs or utilizes positioning devices to set up patient and treatment parameters prior to initiation of Radiation Therapy.
- Accurately administers radiation treatment according to department policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates ability to provide treatment at multiple locations as needed to provide coverage.
- Knowledge of physics and human anatomy.
- Responds to and applies critical thinking skills in emergency or crisis situations.
Event Participation and Coordination:
- Participates in Cancer Center sponsored community health screenings and events.
- May attend Tumor Boards or Tumor Conferences sponsored by NAH.
Team Development:
- Coordinates the interviewing, hiring, orientation, and training for all new Radiation Therapists and locums.
- Monitors daily treatment schedule to ensure staffing is appropriate for patient load.
- Promotes educational opportunities for Radiation Therapists.
- Serves as a technical advisor to the Radiation Therapists and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Maintains knowledge of treatment devices and various treatment options.
- S/he provides input on performance evaluations, promotions, and corrective action if needed.
- Documents patient or therapist incidents, communicates concerns to management, and assists with creating a corrective action plan.
Compliance/Safety:
- Responsible for reporting any safety-related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety-related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.
- Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employee's area of responsibility.
- If required for the position, ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.
- Completes all company mandatory modules and required job-specific training in the specified time frame.
- Responsible for reviewing departmental charges ensuring all procedures are accounted for hospital and physician revenue.
Qualifications:
Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) - Required
Graduate of an accredited program in Radiation Therapy Technology - Required
Certification & Licensures:
Registered by State or National Organization in conjunction with Radiation Therapy - Required
BLS (American Heart Association) - Required
Experience:
5 years experience as a Radiation Therapist - Preferred
Experience with Varian ARIA EMR - Preferred
Healthcare is a rapidly changing environment and technology is integrated into almost all aspects of patient care. Colleagues must have an understanding of computers, and competence in using computers and basic software programs.
