Under direction of the Pathologist and Laboratory Manager, performs a variety of standardized chemical, microscopic and bacteriological tests for examination; obtains data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases; orients new employees; and performs other related duties as required.
Clinical Laboratory Scientist I ($39.09 - $50.21 hourly) is entry level to the Clinical Laboratory Scientist series.
Clinical Laboratory Scientist II ($44.10 - $57.40 hourly) is the experienced level to the Clinical Laboratory Scientist series and can work with less-direct supervision.

- Bilingual Incentive - Incumbents may be eligible for bilingual incentive depending upon operational needs and certification of skill.
- Educational Incentive - Incumbents may also be eligible for an educational incentive of 2.5% for completion of an associate degree, 3.5% for completion of a bachelor’s degree, or 5% for completion of a graduate degree for educational attainments not specifically required by the position.
- Evening Shift Differential - 7.5%
- Night Shift Differential - 15%
- Standby Premium Pay - 1/4 of regular hourly wage or Federal minimum wage (whichever is greater)
- Vacation Accrual - New regular, full-time employees shall accrue approximately 14 days of vacation a year for the first 10,400 hours or 5 years of service.
- Deferred Compensation - Eligible to participate in the County's 401(k) Shared Savings Plan and/or the Section 457 Plan.
- Health Plans - Full-time employees are afforded a flexible credit allowance for purchasing medical, dental, and/or vision insurance from a group of authorized plans.
- Flexible Spending Accounts - Choice of participation in the Flexible Spending Accounts which increase spending power through reimbursement of pre-tax dollars for IRS approved dependent care and health care expenses.
- Pension Plan - Both the County and employees contribute to the County's Retirement Plan and to Social Security. If eligible, reciprocity may be established with other public retirement systems, such as PERS.
- Holidays - 12 paid days per year which includes a scheduled floating holiday.

Clinical Laboratory Scientist I/II are represented by the Service Employees' International Union (SEIU) and are eligible for overtime compensation.
NOTE: If appointed at the lower level, the incumbent may be promoted to the higher level without further examination upon meeting the minimum requirements, demonstrating satisfactory performance, and in accordance with the business needs of the department.

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:- Performs a variety of tests in any or all of the fields of medical technology;
- Completion of technical testing/reporting in serology, blood bank, microbiology, hematology, coagulation, chemistry, special chemistry and urinalysis;
- Performs venipuncture as required;
- Assists in maintaining the laboratory and equipment in a clean and orderly condition;
- Maintains basic records and operates the numerous pieces of electronic equipment and analyzers required for testing;
- Participates in quality assurance and proficiency testing activities; and
- Performs other related duties as required.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCEClinical Laboratory Scientist I- Must possess and maintain a current, valid Clinical Laboratory Scientist Generalist license issued by the State of California Department of Health Services
- No experience required
Clinical Laboratory Scientist II- Must possess and maintain a current, valid Clinical Laboratory Scientist Generalist license issued by the State of California Department of Health Services
- One (1) year of recent experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS- Must be willing to occasionally work in other departments and shifts as needed
- Must be willing to work overtime and standby as needed
DESIRED- Knowledge of one or more sub-specialty such as: Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Microbiology, Urinalysis, and Blood Bank
- Experience in an acute care hospital setting
- Ability to work as an integral part of the laboratory team
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES Thorough knowledge of: the standardized tests performed in Hematology, Serology, Chemistry, Blood bank, Microbiology, Urinalysis.
Working ability to: perform all the above standardized tests; work cautiously and accurately; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; work with and understand operation of technical equipment.
