This position works with the Capital Projects department as well as other NVE departments to
complete any and all laborer work. This position uses physical labor, chainsaws and power tools
to complete projects. On some projects, it may be required to stay overnight or for longer
periods of time in remote areas.

This position performs a variety of routine work within established policies and procedures and
receives detailed instructions on new projects and assignments while instructing other labor
Responsibilities/Duties
- Receive direction from project supervisors.
- Follow work plan including strict safety protocols.
- Provide guidance and supervision to other labor technicians or field crews.
- Repair erosion damage to trails.
- Organize work and supplies for project completion.
- Ensure project is progressing according to schedule.
- Operate NVE vehicles such as autos, boats and ATV’s according to NVE safety guidelines.
- Assist with construction of temporary structures.
- Remove hazardous waste, including contaminated dirt and abandoned tanks and military
items.
- Conduct soil and water sampling for hazardous waste.
- Operate chainsaws and other power equipment in a safe manner.
- Conduct and record daily safety meetings.
- Maintain equipment such as saws, tools, heavy equipment, and boats.
- Attend all required staff meetings and trainings.
- Other duties as assigned.
Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
Must be a hard worker and have the ability to be self-motivated and work together with a crew in
a remote setting. Must have the knowledge and skills to assess field conditions. Must have the
ability to keep calm and work as a team leader at all times. Must have the ability to physically
labor for long hours in rough terrain. Must have knowledge of basic power tool operation and
ability to complete work safely and efficiently using power and hand tools. Ability to work and
live in remote wooded areas safely. Needs knowledge of safe working practices in the woods.
Water crossing, water safety, knowledge and experience preferred. Ability to operate ATV’s,
knowledge and skills operating small boats in open and swift water preferred. Ability to run and
service chain saws, hand held brush cutters, trucks, ATVs, hand tools and material handling
equipment. Willingness to participate in and comply with safety training programs.
Experience Requirement
General boating and outboard knowledge and experience. Experience with 4wd and ATV trail
running. Experience in operating small boats, ATV’s and power tools required. Experience
working in remote areas and in outdoor conditions preferred. Must be minimum 18 years of age
and possess a current Alaska Driver’s license. Will be subject to drug and alcohol screening as per
Education Requirement
High school diploma, equivalent or enrolled in secondary school.
Performance Standard
Applicant must be able to regularly lift and carry 50 lbs. over rough terrain. The position requires
that applicants are in sufficient condition to perform physically demanding tasks. The use of
hand, eye and muscle coordination to safely operate boats, trucks, power tools and hand tools is
required.
Majority of work will be completed out of doors. The position poses significant risk of
encountering inclement/cold weather and dangerous wildlife. Some possibility of remote/cold
water survival situations. This position entails risks of injury from using power tools and normal
risks of physical labor done in the outdoors.
