Purpose Statement/Position Summary: Under supervision of Animal Care Facility (ACF) Manager, senior technicians (Animal Technicians III & IV), and/or Veterinary Technician, position provides daily animal husbandry, including weekends and holidays as needed. Primary responsibilities include daily care and health monitoring of laboratory animals utilizing specialized equipment and processes, as well as daily maintenance of animal housing and usage areas. Position must support daily operational tasks wherever required, including cage wash. Position must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills using clinical laboratory animal health terminology and must demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook) for communications and recordkeeping. Requires general knowledge of laboratory animal species used to support research at CHLA. Requires basic understanding of, and ability to utilize, common animal care facility systems, including ventilated cage racks, automated watering system, cage wash equipment, and environmental monitors. High school diploma or equivalent required; BSc degree in Biological or Animal Health Science-related area of study preferred. 1-2 years experience in an AAALAC accredited facility preferred but not necessary. AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level within 18-24 months of hire is strongly encouraged to enhance technical competency.
Minimum Qualifications/Work Experience: Required to work around various types of animals and with live cultures. Minimum Experience Preferred: 1-2 years experience in an AAALAC accredited facility preferred but not required.
Skills Preferred: Rodent handling, health monitoring and familiarity with animal research and support equipment. Ability to move heavy wheeled equipment and lift up to 30 lbs.
Education/Licensure/Certification: High school diploma or equivalent.
License, Registration or Certification Preferred: None preferred, but acquisition of AALAS Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification within 18-24 months of hire is strongly encouraged.
Pay Scale Information$33,072.00-$51,189.00

Final determination of a successful candidate’s starting pay will vary based on a number of factors, including, but not limited to education and experience within the job or the industry. The pay scale listed for this position is generally for candidates that meet the specified qualifications and requirements listed on this specific job description. Additional pay may be determined for those candidates that exceed these specified qualifications and requirements.
