The Rutgers Institute of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (EOAS) invites applications for its 2019-2020 Institute Postdoctoral Program.
Postdoctoral Associates – Rutgers Institute of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences
EOAS is seeking two Institute Postdoctoral Associates to conduct innovative, interdisciplinary research in Earth system science. EOAS Institute Postdoctoral Associates are appointed for one year starting on September 1, and may be re-appointed for one additional year contingent upon sufficient funding and satisfactory performance.
Application Deadline: January 15, 2019
Decisions: March 2019
Start Date: September 1, 2019
Application Materials
Candidates must complete an online application and are required to submit the following materials:
Research Proposal Format and Guidelines
Three (3) page maximum; double-spaced; one-inch margins; minimum 11-point standard font. References are required but not included in the three-page maximum. Figures do not count toward the page limit. The research proposal should clearly outline project motivation, hypotheses to be tested, methods to be used, the intellectual merit and broader impacts of the project, and the potential for the project to lead to external funding. Candidates’ research proposals must be developed in consultation with their proposed faculty mentors, who should be clearly identified in the proposal.
Research Foci and Mentors
EOAS welcomes proposals in all areas that advance the scientific understanding of the past, present, and future of the Earth system and/or build the knowledge and perspective needed for stewardship of a healthy, sustainable, and resilient planetary environment.
Candidates should review the EOAS Faculty Directory for a complete list of potential mentors. Proposed mentorship teams must include at least one faculty member from the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, which includes the departments of Ecology, Evolution & Natural Resources, Environmental Sciences, and Marine & Coastal Sciences.
Faculty-identified broad topical areas are provided as illustrative examples. The faculty listed in the different topical areas have expressed interest and would be useful points of contact for candidates interested in the area, but they are not an exclusive set; any of EOAS’ more than 120 faculty members can be part of a mentoring team.
Selection Criteria
Candidates will be evaluated based on: 1) their past record and letters of reference; 2) the feasibility, intellectual merit, and broader impacts of their proposed research, including the potential for their work to advance cross-disciplinary research at Rutgers within the Earth system sciences; and 3) the ability of their proposed mentor team to facilitate their research.
