GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the direction and supervision of the responsible Registered Nurse, performs specific patient care duties to meet safety and comfort needs of the patient using the nursing process. Provides input to assist the RN in planning and implementing patient care. Responds to emergent situations according to established procedures. Recognizes and participates in own continuing education.
UNIT OVERVIEW:
29 bed Medical Oncology and Inpatient Hospice unit. This unit sees patients that have cancer diagnoses that may require inpatient chemotherapy/immunotherapy infusions. Comfort, end of life, and hospice care are also provided by the nursing staff. The unit also cares for patients post-bariatric surgery and does not have telemetry.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
- Enrolled in an accredited school of nursing (BSN schools preferred).
- The completion of two clinical rotations, one of which must be Med/Surg (in an acute care setting). To remain in the extern role you MUST: Actively be enrolled in a nursing program; Successfully complete each course; Provide transcripts to Nurse Manager after each course; Provide a copy of your plan of work to your Nurse Manager. If at any point the extern does not meet their academic institution's standard for continued enrollment in the school of nursing classes, their employment as an extern will be rescinded.
- BLS Healthcare provider to be completed during orientation.
- Physical ability to lift and move patients, supplies, and equipment with appropriate technique/device.
- Successful completion of 180-day introductory period required to achieve knowledge of policies relative to job duties and patient care unit.
