Resource Technologist A (Immune Health Institute)
Job Description Summary
The Institute for Immunology and Immune Health (I3H) at the University of Pennsylvania is looking to add a highly motivated Resource Technologist with experience in immunology to our team. The goal of the Immune Health group is to characterize features of patients' immune systems that can influence decisions about diagnosis, treatment, and/or prevention for a range of health conditions. Our mission is not only to make scientific discoveries, but also to integrate these findings into patient medical records so that they can have a more immediate impact on clinical treatment.
I3H combines the brilliance and innovation of UPenn’s Immunology and UPHS’ first mover position in immune-centric clinical therapy. A Resource Technologist will help us scale up our efforts to evaluate clinical samples. He or she will be responsible for data collection, sample processing, and routine maintenance of mass cytometry and flow cytometer instruments. We are looking for highly motivated people with prior experience handling human samples in a lab setting and flow cytometry. Aside from receiving training in mass cytometry and spectral flow cytometry, qualified applicants will also get guidance in basic data analysis and familiarity with scientific literature. This is a unique opportunity of becoming a member of a highly driven, patient-centered team that collaborates closely with partners to significantly improve the lives of people with serious unmet medical needs.
Job Responsibilities
- Process samples (Human blood, tissues etc.), isolation of PBMC, plasma and serum.
- Cryopreservation of samples and biospecimen.
- Prepare human clinical samples for high-dimensional phenotypic and functional analysis of single cells using mass cytometry (CyTOF) and spectral flow cytometry instruments.
- Perform routine maintenance of lab equipment, and when required, interface with technical support for repairs.
- Preparation of reagents, including conjugation and purification of antibodies, Testing and titration of antibodies and other reagents for optimal concentrations and function.
- Ensure proper data management and backup and assist in data analysis.
- Record daily experimental procedures. Ensure samples are accurately tracked throughout each step, up to and including data generation, analysis and storage using the lab sample and file inventory databases.
- Follow established standard procedures, with attention to detail.
- Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability and eagerness to work in a team setting.
- Willingness to work flexible hours required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science and 0 to 1 year of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Laboratory experience with basic techniques is preferred. Additionally, attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and ability to work flexibly and collaboratively in a team environment are required.
