MaineHealth Maine Medical Center-Portland is seeking a full-time certified nurse midwife to serve as the inaugural lead of the inpatient midwifery service at Maine Medical Center, supervising a growing service of five, working closely with physicians and other staff members to ensure clinical excellence supporting all patients during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. This position requires providing clinical care in fast-paced inpatient settings as a certified nurse midwife. Responsibilities will include in-house shifts covering the obstetrical emergency department, postpartum unit, and labor and delivery.

- The lead midwife will join our growing inpatient midwifery division, currently composed of four certified nurse midwives.
- This leadership position will oversee the inpatient midwifery service and report directly to the medical director of inpatient obstetrics.
The department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center currently has 32 employed faculty physicians and 16 advanced practice providers. This position will supervise and collaborate with resident learners. The MMC obstetrics and gynecology residency program, founded in 1976, has a rich history of training the Obstetrics and Gynecology physician workforce of Maine and supports 20 post-graduate trainees. Maine Medical Center (MMC) serves as the flagship of MaineHealth’s integrated delivery system. MMC has 900 licensed beds across 3 campuses and is the state’s leading tertiary care hospital, performing over 3,000 deliveries annually supported by a Level IV NICU with 50 beds.
Desired Qualifications & Experience:
Education: BSN/MSN and successful completion of nurse midwifery program accredited by the ACME.
License/Certifications: Active State of Maine Nursing License for RN and APRN-CNM; Certification by AMCB; Active DEA License; Current BLS certification.
Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience practicing as a certified nurse midwife; Knowledge of nurse midwifery principles and techniques; Knowledge of methods ensuring a safe working environment for patient, family, and staff including using appropriate personal protection equipment; Skill in midwifery practice including appropriate prenatal education and support, coaching during pregnancy and delivery, as well as postpartum care; Use of critical thinking to assess a situation, consider alternatives, and choose an appropriate course of action; Comfortable in fast-paced, academic hospital-based model of obstetrical care; Understanding of health care technology, equipment, and supplies; Knowledge of chart/medical record documentation requirements and federal/state laws related to the release of health care information; Ability to use Electronic Health Record; Skill in time management, problem-solving, multitasking, prioritizing, and medical care coordination; Ability to establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, physicians, and staff; Prior interaction with obstetrical physician learners in both undergraduate and graduate medical education; Adaptable to meeting the needs of the obstetric patients of the Family Birth Center.
