A new lead research specialist position is available in the laboratory of Renee Read in the Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia USA. Successful applicants will join our diverse and collaborative translational research team to study the genetics and biology of pediatric and adult glioblastoma.
This position will involve carrying out experiments as well as acting as lab management. Our research program uses a multidisciplinary approach to analyze how developmental cell-signaling pathways interface with mutant variants of receptor tyrosine kinases in glial tumorigenesis and glial development. Job duties will include experiments with cell culture models and animal models of brain cancer, handling laboratory equipment installation and repairs, preparing and organizing biological samples and reagents in the lab. The new research specialist will train with Dr. Read, collaborators, and senior staff, and will carry out projects and duties under the supervision of Dr. Read and her lab members.
Members of our lab will have opportunities to learn more about therapeutics, neural stem cell biology, epigenetics, functional genomics, and bioinformatics in team-oriented projects that involve collaborations with other neuro-oncology research groups in the Departments of Neurosurgery, Pediatrics, Pathology, and Human Genetics.
Competitive candidates will have a background in neurobiology, stem cell biology, or genetics. Previous experience in neural stem cell culture, neuro-anatomy, Drosophila neuro-genetics, and/or related areas is preferred. The candidate will have the opportunity to obtain new training in bioinformatics and biostatistics, mentor students and other trainees, and contribute to manuscripts and grant applications. The preferred candidate will have a bachelor’s degree, excellent written/verbal English communication skills, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently while being a team player.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Under minimal supervision, performs a variety of specialized and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures.
- Uses independent judgment in applying or adapting scientific techniques. May assist in protocol design.
- Investigates and proposes alternative experimental procedures for consideration by a principal investigator.
- Assists in planning and scheduling research procedures.
- Analyzes and interprets results of studies.
- Demonstrates and trains others in the proper use/operation of laboratory techniques and equipment.
- Calibrates, troubleshoots and performs routine repair and maintenance of equipment.
- Reviews literature for related research developments and techniques and compiles findings.
- Monitors laboratory processes to maintain quality assurance standards.
- Records results of studies, compiles and analyzes data and prepares charts and graphs.
- Monitors the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances.
- Performs related responsibilities as required.
- Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in a scientific field and two years of research experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
Preferred Qualifications:
- B.S or M.S. with laboratory experience.
