The general range for this position is $35,000 – 45,000 annually. Salary offers will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, skills, training and education.
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Clinical Veterinary Intern for our Black Beauty Ranch (BBR) in Murchison, Texas. In this position you will p erform, instruct, and oversee clinical treatments under supervision of the Director of Veterinary Medicine at Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch.
Responsibilities:
- Provides direct medical care for animals including treatment of routine and emergency cases, medical evaluation, and surgery under the supervision of the Director of Veterinary Medicine at Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch;
- Conducts capture, transport on property and release for animals including dangerous and exotic species. Maintains anesthetic equipment and keeps up-to-date skills and knowledge on the protocol for capture operations;
- Prescribes and monitors medications, treatments, and nutritional plans and instructs caregivers in the administration of prescriptions;
- Assists in creating, implementing, and maintaining protocols and species-specific care programs pertaining to operational standards, chemical capture, anesthetic procedure, equipment, nutrition and diet, enrichment, and quarantine, in consultation with the Director of Veterinary Medicine;
- Provides guidance and mentorship and arranges trainings for the animal care staff and veterinary interns and externs in medicine, nutrition, surgery, chemical capture, euthanasia, emergency response, communications, and ranch operations;
- Facilitates team meetings in the request of the Director of Veterinary Medicine. Participates in clinical research and travel for meetings and continuing education as needed;
- Consults with the facilities team on modifications to habitat setups and accessible enclosure construction, performs safety inspections, and ensures compliance with USDA and GFAS regulations;
- Participates in the emergency preparedness program and assists in preparing operating procedures for disaster response, completing required FEMA training as needed;
- Performs other duties or responsibilities, as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- DVM or VMD degree required;
- Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a Texas state Veterinary license;
- Must have or be able to obtain and maintain up-to-date rabies prophylaxis and titer and TB testing;
- Willing and able to work a flexible schedule, travel as needed, and be on call for center emergencies;
- A valid driver’s license is required, and a clean driving record is strongly preferred, with the ability to demonstrate and maintain a safe driving record while employed;
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook) and ZIMs;
- Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated and proactive;
- Ability to multitask and be flexible with regard to workload and assignments;
- Ability to exercise good judgment;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills;
- Attention to detail and commitment to excellence demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes;
- Ability to work both independently and as an effective team member in a team environment;
- Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred.
This is a full time position located in Murchison, TX.
