JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:
The Laboratory Manager is responsible for maintaining a safe and legally compliant QA/QC analytical laboratory, overseeing the day-to-day operations in the laboratory units engaged in performing chemical and physical analyses and tests required for development and quality control of products, and collaborating with the R&D group in commissioning new lab procedures and providing analytical support to the R&D initiatives.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Continually work to improve the safety and legal compliance of the QA/QC analytical laboratory.
- Establish goals, and schedule and coordinate laboratory administration, including purchasing and maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies.
- Ensure that all activities are in compliance with organization goals and applicable regulations.
- Prepare laboratory activity reports and make recommendations to improve consistent and efficient laboratory operations.
- Work within established budgetary guidelines.
- Participate in laboratory standardization and quality improvement initiatives with all other Catalyst labs.
- Develop, train and mentor laboratory staff.
- Oversee the quality of the products made throughout the plant.
- Maintain laboratory schedule and manage shift changes.
- Participate in performance evaluations; schedule and approve overtime; take disciplinary action as necessary.
- Perform quality checks on lab personnel.
- Create and send Certificates of Analysis for all orders.
- Advise on instrument and procedure improvements.
- Commission new instruments as needed.
- Collaborate with R&D on new product initiatives.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a physical science preferred.
- A minimum of 5 years related experience and/or training required; 2 years leadership experience preferred.
- Experience with QC methods in the laboratory and in the handling of hazardous substances.
- Preferred: experience in XRF, TGA, and ICP.
- SAP experience preferred.
- LIMS experience preferred.
Language/Math/Reasoning Ability:
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
- A command and working knowledge of basic mathematics.
- Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Ability to apply the scientific method; define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Computer Skills:
- Intermediate personal computer skills including record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.
- Basic Microsoft Office suite, including Word and Excel.
