Supervisor: Radiation Oncology Doctors, Medical Director, and Hospital Manager
Employment Status: Full time
Work Hours: 40 hours per week (Daytime Shifts Mon-Fri 5-8s)
Required for this position:
- Graduation from an accredited Radiation Therapy Technician program in the United States or Canada.
- Proven track record of clinical excellence and therapy abilities.
- Ability to follow directions with and without supervision.
- Ability to learn and understand medical terminology and procedures.
- Ability to admit or ask questions when a task is unclear.
- Ability to show leadership towards veterinary techs, assistants, and volunteers.
- Ability to adapt to the needs and styles of other technicians and doctors.
- Ability to work with computers and other office equipment.
- Ability to spell, alphabetize, and perform basic mathematics.
Task Descriptions:
As a veterinary radiation therapy technician, your job entails several important aspects of our radiation therapy service.
Job Description:
Under the direct supervision of the Specialty Lead and/or the direction of a staff veterinary radiation oncologist, performs a variety of duties to assist in providing care for radiation oncology patients and promoting a safe, positive, and team-oriented environment. This position provides a high level of quality service to patients found within the scope of services. Therapists should be caring, sympathetic, responsible, and detail-oriented. They must be able to direct or supervise others, correctly assess patients’ conditions, and communicate with the staff radiation oncologists. Coordinate and provide radiation therapy for in- and outpatients; actively facilitate a team-oriented work ethic within the Radiation Oncology service.
Halcyon Operation and Quality Assurance:
- Run machine performance checks each morning and as needed throughout the day.
- Perform the required daily and quality assurance testing.
- Collaborate with Varian hardware and software support to maintain smooth service operation.
- Understand the underlying principles behind high energy x-ray production and treatment administration.
- Troubleshooting skills to address treatment system errors.
- Perform CT scanner warm-up and shutdown as appropriate for the machine.
- Notify administration if there are issues that need to be addressed with the CT scanner.
Veterinary Radiation Therapy and Care:
- Responsible for coordinating activities in the Radiation Oncology Treatment Schedule in conjunction with the radiation oncologist.
- Provide professional care to patients undergoing radiation therapy, prepare and maintain the radiation oncology space for all radiation therapy procedures, and assemble the type and quantity of material and special equipment needed for daily procedures and possible emergencies.
- Responsible for positioning and CT simulation of radiation therapy patients.
- Demonstrates knowledge of standard procedures related to radiation therapy, such as stereotactic treatment delivery, patient setup tolerances and rationale, etc.
- Assist the radiation oncologist during advanced/critical therapy.
- Able to process and clean all special equipment including bolus, bite plates, treatment couch, face masks, vaclok bags, and bridges.
- Demonstrates general knowledge of physics and radiation biology related to the rationale behind radiation therapy.

- Maintain a clean workspace and ensure it is organized.
Physical Requirements:
- Dependable attendance is required.
- Must be able to lift 40 pounds.
- This position requires the ability to walk, bend, stand, and reach constantly during a minimum 8-hour day.
- Visual acuity sufficient to maintain accurate records, recognize people and understand written directions.
Duties will include:
- Maintaining accurate records.
- Performing radiation therapy as directed by our radiation oncologist.
- Patient setup and CT simulation.
- Strategic planning to maximize ease of daily flow.
- Teaching/Mentoring other staff within VCA regarding service flow and equipment at BAVS.
- Interfacing with radiation oncology hardware and software support services.
- Light dosimetry work.
- Team collaboration for total patient care.
- Morning machine warm-up and QA as directed by the facility physicist.
