Position Summary
This is clinical work in the application of prescribed courses of radiation therapy. Work includes the monitoring and calibrating of machine functions, instruction of students, and shielding and positioning of patients as prescribed in the individual treatment plan. Work is normally performed along with another Therapist and is cross-checked by the accompanying Therapist. Performance is reviewed by the Supervising Radiation Therapist (with physician feedback) through adherence to treatment prescriptions.
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
- Education: Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, physics, chemistry, radiation safety as well as radiation therapy procedures, techniques, and equipment and safety and health precautions at a level generally acquired through completion of an approved 2 year program in Radiation Therapy Technology.
- License/Certifications: Completion of an accredited program in Radiation Therapy and registration through A.R.R.T. and licensure by the State of Maine (September 1984).
- Experience: Knowledge of department policies and procedures as well as proficiency in performing radiation therapy treatments at a level generally acquired during three to six months on-the-job training and experience.
- Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail.
- Analytical ability to prepare equipment properly and reproduce patient positioning and treatment on a daily basis.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to explain therapy and treatment programs to patients to allay apprehensions and elicit their cooperation. Must communicate effectively with physicians.
