Summary:
An endoscopy technician is a clinical assistant who supports and assists gastroenterology (GI) specialists while they use endoscopes to perform exploratory procedures of the stomach, colon, and esophagus. Some of these endoscopic procedures include colonoscopy visualization and biopsy specimen collection. Computer proficiency in an endoscopic software program may also be a component of this position. An important part of the job also includes strict adherence to infection control measures in regard to endoscope reprocessing.
Position Responsibilities:
- Maintain inventories of endoscopic equipment and supplies, stocking when necessary.
- Perform safety checks to verify proper equipment functioning and correct identification of the patient and correlates patient to an endoscopic software program.
- Clean, disinfect, and maintain scopes or other endoscopic instruments according to manufacturer recommendations and facility standards. Troubleshooting any problems that may arise and also cleans equipment and instrumentation. Using endoscope reprocessor, manual cleaning, disinfecting, etc. assuring sterilization of scopes and their related components.
- Maintain endoscopic equipment, sending for repair if necessary. Networks with vendors and repair people in assuring all equipment is in proper working order.
- May obtain specimens assisting physician and circulator. Performs direct patient care maintaining a safe environment during induction, emergence and the procedure.
- Performs as a team member assisting the circulator, anesthesia, and physician as necessary in setting up the procedure room, monitoring patient safety, performing time out, assisting with room turn around, maintaining multiple quality control logs, assisting with patient flow, supports other departments as needed, and troubleshooting endoscopic software programs.
Position Qualifications Required / Experience Required:
Endoscopy technician must hold a certification in endoscopy technology (gained within three months of employment) or be certified from a surgical technology training program (prior to employment). On the job training / certification will be provided.
Required Education:
High school diploma or equivalent, with training offered on the job in entry-level positions.
Training/Certifications/Licensure:
Basic Life Support (BLS).
