Job Summary
Under direction of the Laboratory Manager, provides diagnostic laboratory test results. Ensures appropriate collection and preparation of patient specimens, performance of laboratory test procedures according to protocols, instrumentation, and evaluation of information taking appropriate action as needed. Laboratory Procedure Manuals and Safety Manuals are available for reference during and after individual training. It is the responsibility of Laboratory staff to follow the procedures approved by the Lab Director and suggest revisions as needed.
Salary Rate / Pay Rate
$25.00/hour
Required Qualifications
- High school graduation or equivalent.
- Meets basic standards and qualifications for laboratory testing personnel under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), Subpart M, Section 493.1489.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of tests and procedures provided by the SHS Lab.
- Knowledge of state and federal licensing requirements (ie. CLIA)
- Knowledge of physiology and pathology as related to clinical diagnosis and treatment.
- Knowledge of basic principles of lab medicine as it relates to medical clinical lab testing.
- Knowledge of basic medical clinical instrumentation.
- Knowledge of instrumentation troubleshooting and preventive maintenance.
- Manual dexterity.
- Oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to learn basic management principles.
- Ability to learn basic computer operations.
- Organizational ability.
- Ability to operate complex lab equipment.
- Ability to maintain necessary records and reports.
- Ability to recognize abnormal results and act appropriately.
- Ability to interact effectively and appropriately with SHS facility personnel.
- Ability to determine the validity of results and initiate corrective action.
- Ability to manage several tasks at once.
- Ability to perform phlebotomy.
Work Hours
As needed, up to 28 hours per week

Extra Help employees may only work up to 28 hours per week for all University employment. Employees are only paid for hours worked and do not qualify for most benefits including health insurance and retirement, with Illinois State University. However, Extra Help employees are eligible to participate in the University's supplemental retirement savings plans (403b). Applicable retirement information is provided at the time of hire. There is no guarantee that working as Extra Help will lead to or secure permanent employment. In addition, extra help employees may only work up to 900 hours total during their employment.
