Job Description
Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the educational needs of individual diabetes patients, family and support systems regarding respiratory problems. Utilizes empowerment theory, motivational interviewing, goal setting and teach-back evaluation in a patient-centric approach to education. Conducts respiratory self-management education according to best practices in both individual and group setting. Performs direct patient care duties.
Job Responsibility
- Conducts orientation for new staff members following the orientation outline.
- Assesses skills of new staff members and teaches/reviews Team Steps and Service Excellence.
- Provides orientation on ventilators for new nurses and in-service education for critical care nurses.
- Provides in-service education for staff members on new modalities as well as current modes of therapy.
- Assists staff members who need help in improving their skills.
- Participates in reviewing procedures and forms when up-dating may be indicated.
- Communicates suggestions for improving in-service programs.
- Maintains related orientation and training records, and summarizes for reporting purposes.
- Provides respiratory therapy as prescribed by a Physician, provides patient/significant other with respiratory therapy education as well as prepares, operates and maintains respiratory care equipment.

Job Qualification
- Associate's Degree required, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Current License to practice as a Respiratory Therapist in New York State, and Current Respiratory Therapist (NBRC) Certification in New York State required, plus specialized certifications as needed.
- 1-3 years of relevant experience, required.
