Overview
The Nurse Manager is responsible on the night shift (4 ten hour shifts), for quality and safety of outcomes consistent with the philosophy and goals of the institution. The Nurse Manager facilitates employee and patient satisfaction through professional oversight.
Responsibilities
- CUSTOMER PATIENT FOCUS
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with patients, visitors, and other employees. Interacts professionally, courteously, and appropriately with patients, visitors and other employees. Behaves in a manner consistent with maintaining and furthering a positive public perception of BronxCare Health System and its employees.
- Utilizes the principles of leadership established by the AONE and ANA.
- Contributes to and participates in the Performance/Quality Improvement activities of the assigned department, including data collection, analysis, implementation of and compliance with risk management and claims activities, support of and participation in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) teams, and adherence to the specific rules and regulations of the BronxCare Health System.
- LEADERSHIP RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT
- Communicate clearly and concisely with internal and external customers, establishing and maintaining relationships, and facilitating constructive interactions.
- In conjunction with the Chairman of Surgery and VP/CNO when applicable, establish policy, systems and structures that support interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Coordinate with Neurosurgical vendors and the Operating Room on supplies and equipment.
- Apply and communicate effective and principle-based labor mediation, negotiation and dispute resolution strategies.
- LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

- Demonstrate congruence between leadership and surgeons behavior and values about patient care.
- Manage on call schedule and Operating Room scheduling process for Neurosurgery.
- Create, structure, and implement planned evidence based change through strategic vision, risk taking and effective communication.
- Track all Neurosurgery procedures; provide guidance on coding and billing.
- Assist with managing budget for defined area; provide cost-effective use of resources.
- Participate in and represent the Department of Surgery and Nursing at corporate administrative professional forums and meetings.
- Ensure compliance with standards of regulatory agencies, including The Joint Commission and New York State Department of Health.
- Participate in activities which promote own professional growth and development.
- Demonstrate expert application of advanced nursing practice and promote the professional image of nursing.
- Facilitate teamwork and address issues with a positive problem solving approach.
- Assist in educating Nursing on General Surgery and Neurosurgery protocols.
- PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
- Provide primary care for the General Surgery/Neurosurgery Clinic under the supervision of collaborating physician.
- Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary program to meet the needs of individual patients.
- Order customary laboratory, radiological and diagnostic studies per practice protocols.
- Formulate the plan of care with the attending physician, patient and family.
- Evaluate treatment and health care plans for effectiveness and modify as needed.
- Educate patient and family to facilitate and promote healthy adjustment to new health patterns.
- Participate in staff development and establish professional contact with community organizations.
- Promote an ethical climate that addresses accountability for patient safety.
- ACCOUNTABILITY/WORK ETHIC
- Demonstrate an understanding of the organization's fire/safety plan and emergency preparedness plan.
- Wear employee ID badge at all times.
- Demonstrate flexibility in schedule to accommodate organization needs.
- Accept special projects as determined by VP/CNO, Patient Care Services.
- CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITY
- Assess the individual and family health status.
- Secure health histories, perform physical examinations and screening tests.
- Accurate recording and tracking of clinical and statistical data.
- Advise and counsel patient about their physical and mental health.
- Plan and implement routine care practices in collaboration with health professionals.
- Conduct comprehensive home visits to patients referred to the asthma referral home visit program.
- Assess and manage common acute and chronic illnesses in accordance with protocols.
- Prescribe selective medications under standing orders of the Physician.
- Participate in outreach programs and community health education.
- PATIENT ADVOCACY – CUSTOMER SERVICE
- Present to patients/customers with appropriate attitude.
- Respect patient/customer privacy and maintain a secure work environment.
- Maintain an appropriate professional appearance and a clean working environment.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited Nurse program, and licensed and currently registered as a Professional Nurse in the state of New York.
- New York RN Licensure – Current Registration.
- Membership in Professional Organization.
- Bachelor’s in Nursing Healthcare.
- Master’s in Science.
- Decision making and problem solving skills.
- Works as a team player.
- Demonstrates respect and professionalism in all interactions.
- Extensive Computer Knowledge.
