Job Description
The Department of Pathology in Preclinical Safety at AbbVie has an opening for a board-certified veterinary anatomic pathologist working in toxicologic pathology with an interest in digital pathology and AI. The primary role of the pathologist is to assess the safety profile of experimental compounds in a variety of nonclinical species through evaluation of clinical and anatomic pathology data, presentation of data, and preparation of reports. These data enable project teams to de-risk and advance candidate compounds through early to late stages of development. The candidate will also help develop cutting-edge automation and AI technologies for increased efficiency and deeper insights, which helps ensure the safety of medicines reaching patients. The successful candidate will be scientifically curious, a consensus builder, and strive to deliver meticulous and data-driven solutions to create optimal outcomes for patients.
Responsibilities
- Evaluates exploratory and regulated nonclinical toxicity studies to determine the potential toxicity of experimental compounds in different nonclinical species, based on interpretation of pathology data (e.g., necropsy, histopathology, clinical pathology, electron microscopy, IHC).
- Perform pathology peer reviews.
- Provides scientific and technical expertise to interdisciplinary teams working on image analysis projects, including database curation and novel AI model development.
- Integrates the anatomic pathology data, clinical pathology data, and other study findings to generate a pathology report as a component of the toxicology report.
- Provides input to study design, supervises necropsies, performs histological examinations in rodent and non-rodent studies, authors pathology reports, conducts peer reviews, and reviews regulatory documents.
- Partners with data scientists, toxicologists, pharmacologists, and CRO partners to develop optimal strategies to address specific toxicology issues and rapidly prioritize the safest compounds for progression through development.
Qualifications
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or equivalent)
- Board Certification in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology (ACVP or equivalent)
- Candidates with a Ph.D. in pathology or related discipline are preferred.
- Familiarity with related fields: pharmacology, toxicology, and drug development.
- Experience with digital histology image analysis principles and platforms.
- Ability to plan, organize, troubleshoot, interpret, and present findings independently.
