Radiation Therapist - Radiation Oncology
UNM Medical Group, Inc. is hiring for a Radiation Therapist to join our UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center. This opportunity is a full-time day shift opening located in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Summary
Under general supervision, provides radiation therapy to patients as prescribed by physician according to established standards and practices.
Minimum Job Requirements of a Radiation Therapist:
State of New Mexico Licensed Radiation Therapist; American Registry of Radiologic Technology License; CPR Certified. Completed degree from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. Verification of education and licensure (if applicable) will be required if selected for hire.
Duties and Responsibilities of a Radiation Therapist:
- Administers a prescribed and planned course of radiation therapy to patients as prescribed by a radiation oncologist.
- Follows the radiations safety principle of as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) for the patients, self, and others.
- Verifies the treatment plan is consistent with the prescription and can be accurately implemented in the treatment room. Checks prescription, diagnosis, chart, and patient identification, ensuring accurate treatments.
- Educate patients of potential side effects of radiation treatment and how to manage any associated side effects, that includes maintaining patient markings during treatment, explanation and instruction regarding radiation therapy procedures, education on skin care and nutrition.
- Reinforces recommendations given to patient by the physician, dietitian, or other care provider, concerning reaction to treatment and care of the irradiated area, and prevention or treatment of generalized and local side effects.
- Follows established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.
- Prepares written documentation as required by the profession and the department, such as, but not limited to, evaluation results, individualized treatment plans, progress reports, etc.
- Schedules patients for treatments; interfaces with physicist at initiation of treatment; consults with supportive care physicians, nurses, and social workers.
- Prepares room and equipment for patient; transfers immobilized patient from stretcher to treatment couch, giving special care to catheters, IVs, oxygen, respirator, chest tubes, and other life support; positions patient in prescribed anatomical positions for treatment.
- Performs simulations as prescribed by a radiation oncologist.
- Fabricates individualized immobilization devices (molds, blocks, compensators, and other beam-modifying devices).
- Utilizes imaging technologies for the explicit purpose of simulation, treatment planning and treatment delivery as prescribed by a radiation oncologist (e.g., weekly ports, CBCT, kV and MV imaging, and IGRT). Applies corrections or changes to therapy as directed by physician.
- Ensures that the medical equipment is regularly maintained and in excellent working order.
- Performs daily warm-up procedures prior to each patient treatment and maintains documentation of quality assurance activities, procedures, and results in accordance with established guidelines.
- Checks equipment for malfunctions/abnormal quality assurance readings and report any abnormal findings to appropriate personnel (chief radiation therapist or administrator, medical physicist, field service engineer).
- Supervises or participates in the training and education of a variety of students.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
