Job Summary:
The Pornillos Lab in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Utah School of Medicine has immediate openings for highly motivated and innovative Postdoctoral Research Associates. Our group studies the fundamental molecular mechanisms of HIV -1 replication. Several active NIH -funded projects have the goals of: (1) Elucidating the mechanism of HIV -1 genome packaging; (2) Understanding the structure and function of the HIV -1 capsid during the post-entry stages of HIV -1 replication; (3) Understanding how various host cell factors interact with the capsid and virion components as either anti-viral or pro-viral factors, and (4) Characterizing novel anti- HIV inhibitors.
We emphasize interdisciplinary approaches, and integrate structural biology (NMR, X-ray crystallography, cryoEM, cryoET), biochemistry, and molecular virology techniques in our projects. We welcome scientists with well-developed expertise in these areas, who wish to expand their skill sets and knowledge base. Previous experiences and future career objectives will be fully taken into account in determining project assignments. In particular, training opportunities have opened in correlative light and electron microscopy (cryoCLEM), with the recent installation and ongoing acquisition of new instrumentation at the Beckman Center for Cryo-EM on campus.
Responsibilities:
Successful candidates will take the lead in their chosen project. Additional responsibilities will include training or supervision of junior scientists, and contributing to a vibrant and inclusive lab culture wherein each member is accountable to each other. Open communication and a team-oriented attitude are essential. Training will be provided in career skills as appropriate, including scientific communication, paper and grant writing, and funding acquisition.
Minimum Qualifications:
PhD in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Cell Biology, Virology, or related Biomedical Science field is required. Interested applicants should contact Owen Pornillos via email at owen@biochem.utah.edu. Please include a CV, a cover letter that describes your scientific interests and accomplishments as well as future career goals, and contact information for 2 or more references.
Additional Information:
This position may require the successful completion of a criminal background check and/or drug screen. The University of Utah values candidates who have experience working in settings with students and patients from all backgrounds and possess a strong commitment to improving access to higher education and quality healthcare for historically underrepresented students and patients.
