Family Independence Specialist 9-11
Working within local schools, this position develops, implements, and monitors service plans for students and families, designed to promote independence and self-sufficiency. The position is responsible for working directly with clients to access their skills and strengths, identify client barriers to employment, and develop strategies to remove those barriers. This includes providing supportive services, follow-up monitoring, and support in self-sufficiency activities, all while fostering a positive, caring atmosphere to empower the client. Responsibilities also include determining eligibility for financial assistance, food assistance, medical benefits, and making referrals to community resources. This position monitors client activities to ensure that federal participation rates are met and adjusts cases as needed. These services are provided to Michigan families in need of temporary assistance.
Family Independence Specialist 12
This position functions as a senior-level Family Independence Specialist in the Pathways to Potential (P2P) program, working within local schools. Responsibilities mirror those of the FIS 9-11, with added duties of mentoring other FIS P2P staff, providing guidance, and developing training for complex cases.

Education
Possession of a bachelor’s degree in any major with at least 30 semester (45 term) credits in one or a combination of the following human service areas: social welfare, social work, sociology, psychology, family ecology, community services, family studies, family and child development, counseling and guidance, criminal justice, gerontology, special education, education of the emotionally disturbed, or education of the gifted.

Family Independence Specialist 9

Family Independence Specialist 10
One year of professional experience equivalent to a Family Independence Specialist 9 or Services Specialist 9.
Family Independence Specialist P11
One year of professional experience equivalent to a Family Independence Specialist 10 or Services Specialist 10.
Family Independence Specialist P12
One year of professional experience equivalent to a Family Independence Specialist P11 or Services Specialist P11.
Family Independence Specialist 9 - 12
One year of experience as an Assistance Payments Worker, Migrant Program Worker, or a Job Start Worker and a bachelor’s degree in any major may be substituted for the education requirement. Other combinations of experience and education as specified in the original description may also be considered.

The resulting candidate pool will be used to fill both current and future vacancies. Limited Term Appointments (LTA) have the potential to become permanent, but this is not guaranteed.
The physical location of this position is 3040 W. Grand Blvd., Suite 6-350, Detroit, MI 48202. Based on operational needs, remote work and alternate or hybrid work schedule requests may be considered.
This position is located at one or more schools in Wayne County. You will be required to physically report to the school(s).
Selected candidates who have been approved to work remotely or a hybrid schedule must complete that work within Michigan. Candidates should confirm work location and schedule at the time of interview.
