About the Role
The Laboratory Technician will support the day-to-day operations of the Biomedical and Bioengineering Cluster's laboratories, working closely with the cluster lead to maintain and operate laboratory equipment. Responsibilities include assisting academic staff in the effective use of equipment across a diverse range of laboratories, such as PC2, chemistry, biomechanics, and imaging, to support research and teaching. The role may also involve working across other clusters within the Laboratory and Technical Services team.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Provide technical expertise and support for teaching and research activities, advising staff and students on the effective use of specialist laboratory equipment.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, including scheduling services, repairs, calibration, and ensuring safety compliance.
- Manage laboratory inventory, procurement of consumables, and facilitate the purchase of new equipment while meeting OHS and operational requirements.
- Ensure compliance with Quality and OHS regulations, conducting inspections, audits, and maintaining accurate documentation for teaching and research activities.
Who we are looking for
You will have strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. You will be adept at prioritising tasks and meeting deadlines in a high-volume environment, while maintaining excellent customer service. Additionally, you will demonstrate initiative in contributing to planning and have a sound understanding of Australian occupational health and safety (OHS) legislation and laboratory regulations.
You will also have:
- A relevant degree and/or trade, or equivalent combination of experience and education in supporting teaching and research facilities in higher education or industry R&D (Biomedical Engineering/Bioengineering focus).
- Experience in cell/tissue or bacteria cultivation, animal/in vivo work, imaging (histology/microscopy, microCT), or bio-mechanical testing and analysis.
- Experience working in a PC2 laboratory, preferably OGTR-certified, with chemical handling/management.
- Familiarity with working in shared/multi-disciplinary laboratory environments.

This role requires the successful candidate to undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. In the case the selected candidate doesn't have a valid Working with Children Check, they will be able to apply for the WWCC as part of the initial onboarding procedures.
