Under the direction of the Medical Director, Behavioral Health, the provider in this role synthesizes theoretical, scientific, and clinical knowledge for the assessment, management, and treatment of both illness and wellness states. They provide outpatient consultation, diagnosis, and management of various mental, substance abuse, and trauma-related conditions that complicate an individual’s clinical presentation. They are responsible for providing individual and group psychotherapy interventions to individuals, groups, and families around various conditions. They will be responsible for mental health assessments and providing clinical supervision to other licensed professionals, such as LSW’s, Case Managers, and students who are assigned to work with them.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:
Assessment
- Understanding of evidence-based psychosocial treatments for common mental health and addictive disorders (e.g., motivational interviewing, motivational enhancement therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, problem-solving skills training, cognitive restructuring, behavioral activation, contingency management, etc.)
- Understanding and ability to manage and intervene with individuals who experience symptoms of serious mental illness and addictive disorder
- Experience with assessment and treatment planning for common mental health and/or substance use disorders
- Knowledge and understanding of the psychosocial rehabilitation, mental health recovery, and person-centered practices
- Ability to assess and intervene within an individual’s stage of readiness, and deploy stage-wise interventions techniques that are consistent with the individual’s stage of change
- Ability to effectively engage patients in a therapeutic relationship, when appropriate
- Ability to work with patients virtually as well as in person
- Performs comprehensive diagnostic evaluations and evaluations of behaviors, mental status, as well as current and past history of violence, suicidal or other self-harm behaviors, substance abuse, level of functioning, trauma, and social and developmental history
- Assesses various factors which impact mental and physical health such as family history, environment, trauma, culture & ethnicity, spiritual beliefs and practices, physiological processes, coping abilities, cognition, developmental stage, socioeconomic status, gender, substance use/abuse, etc.
- Assesses the impact of acute and /or chronic physical illness, psychiatric disorders and stressors on the individual and family system
- Evaluates and documents potential abuse, neglect and risk individuals may pose to self or others
- Involves individuals, significant others, interdisciplinary team members, and collateral sources in data collection and analysis as indicated
- Demonstrates effective clinical interviewing skills that facilitate the development of a therapeutic relationship
- Manages psychiatric emergencies by determining the level of risk, and then initiating and coordinating effective emergency care as indicated
- Administers age/culturally appropriate screening instruments that provide data that contribute to the treatment plan
- Documents findings and relevant data in the medical record in an organized and timely manner

- Provide clinical and day-to-day supervision to Case Managers/Care Coordinators
- Participates/conducts interdisciplinary team meetings with Case Managers/Care Coordinators
- Coordinates clinical activities/schedules of Case Managers/Care Coordinators
- Coordinate with related programs and services with other hospital disciplines for purposes of coordination of care
- Understanding of industry standards regarding documentation and quality of care regarding documentation
- Responsible for the review of documentation and providing feedback to individuals they supervise
- Able to provide assessments and therapy for the following populations; adolescent, adult, geriatric
Plan of Care and Implementation of Treatment
- Knowledge of the local continuum of care and various resources available to address the psychosocial needs of the population served
- Works collaboratively with the treatment team to provide comprehensive services
- Develops a treatment plan for presenting conditions in coordination with the other members of the team as warranted
- Plans are developed with attention to the various mental health and substance abuse issues seen in the treatment setting and are based on sound psychological theory, evidence-based standards of care, and practice guidelines
Intervention/Implementation
- Provides individual and group psychotherapy
- Demonstrates sound adherence to evidenced-based practices and trauma-informed care
- Tailors psychotherapeutic intervention to client needs as appropriate
- Teaches individuals and significant others about their conditions, and available treatment options
- Provides education to individuals, groups, and families to promote knowledge, understanding, and effective management of various physical, mental, and substance use conditions
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- LISW-S required
- 2 years’ experience in providing supervision to LSW’s and Case Managers
- Master’s degree in Social Work
- Previous experience providing evidence-based psychotherapy is required
- Previous experience in inpatient and outpatient behavioral health settings preferred
- Experience working with individuals who have co-occurring mental health and addictions is desired
- Demonstrates superior customer service, oral, and written communication skills, and is detail-oriented, organized, and timely
- Ability to function as a member of an interdisciplinary team and can coordinate/communicate well with various disciplines in medicine and behavioral health
- Ability to adhere to quality care practices, follow confidentiality/privacy guidelines, and maintain a keen awareness of reporting/statutory/licensing requirements for the position
- Must have a working knowledge of computer applications, and if applicable ability to navigate through the electronic health record
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
