RN Residency, Critical Care (Fall/Winter Cohort)
Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist is seeking full-time New Grad RNs for our Critical Care Residency at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. A New Graduate Nurse is either a current nursing student nearing graduation from an RN program or a recent graduate with less than six months of clinical experience as a Registered Nurse.
Position Highlights
- Facility: Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center , an 885-bed tertiary-care hospital in Winston-Salem and the region's only Level 1 trauma center, serves as the cornerstone of a globally recognized health system that integrates exceptional patient care, cutting-edge research, and comprehensive medical education through a network of community hospitals, specialty locations, and the renowned Wake Forest School of Medicine.
- Residency Program: New Graduate RNs at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist receive supportive training led by dedicated nurse educators, including clinical orientation, specialty-specific learning, and skill-building in clinical decision-making, teamwork, communication, and career development.
The Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center Critical Care units include:
- Medical ICU: This 32-bed unit provides evidence-based care for critical conditions such as COVID-19, COPD, GI bleeds, sepsis, renal and liver failure, and medication overdoses, among others.
- Neuro ICU: This 16-bed unit, a Comprehensive Stroke Center, offers advanced, patient-centered care with expertise in hemodynamic monitoring, continuous dialysis, mechanical ventilation, and supportive end-of-life care.
- Trauma ICU: This 14-bed unit provides specialized, patient-centered care for critical trauma cases, utilizing advanced equipment like hemodynamic monitoring, CRRT, and mechanical ventilation. Nurses are trained in various procedures and can pursue specialized certifications, including Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC).
- CVICU: This 22-bed unit specializes in cardiac care, including advanced heart failure, heart transplants, and post-arrest hypothermia. It features a 2:1 nurse-to-patient ratio and dedicated charge nurses for unit management and support.
- Surgical Oncology ICU: This 16-bed unit provides specialized care for surgical patients, including advanced hemodynamic monitoring, CRRT, and complex wound care. It features a mobile OR and supports various IV therapies and invasive procedures.
- Medical Oncology ICU: This 12-bed unit focuses on assessing patient responses to treatment, providing emotional support, and communicating with patients and families. It utilizes advanced equipment, including ceiling lifts and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy machines, and manages various lines, tubes, and intravenous drips.

Job Summary
The New Graduate Nurse provides nursing care to patients using the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation). They lead and direct other assigned team members and collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to provide age/developmentally appropriate care in accordance with nursing standards of care and practice.
What You’ll Need
- Less than 6 months of RN experience
- Graduation from accredited School of Nursing; BSN preferred.
- Registered Nurse licensure from the State of North Carolina Board of Nursing
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) required
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required within 1 year of hire, per unit guidelines
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required within 1 year of hire, per unit guidelines
