We are seeking an accomplished technology leader to join the Humana Government Business (HGB) team as Associate Vice President, Software Engineering. In this newly-created role, your responsibilities will span a wide range of functions, including consumer, clinical, and provider-facing applications; enterprise data; business intelligence; and integrations. You will focus on driving organizational agility to achieve greater operational performance and strengthen our position to be awarded a renewal of the TRICARE contract. You will set the strategy and create and refine the operational governance and framework (metrics, budget, processes, etc.) that will guide the efforts of the Software Engineering team and enable it to create value for the business and the consumers we serve.
You will report directly to the Vice President of HGB Information Systems and will lead a multi-level organization of 60-70 associates, including three Director-level direct reports. This position can be located anywhere within the lower 48 states.
Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with the Enterprise Solution Group leader, Product Management, and Chief Architect in establishing the vision for HGB's software architecture to support the demands of today's applications, future products, and platforms. Lead the team to execute on this vision.
- Lead, manage, and grow a top-flight technology team of software professionals responsible for the design, engineering, performance, security engineering, and ongoing maintenance of HGB's portfolio that consistently delivers business results.
- Work closely with our HR organization to continually enhance our recruiting, onboarding, and training programs to support the continued rapid growth of our engineering organization.
- Work closely with procurement and peers to identify and leverage top outside services talent to grow talent and maximize business results.
- Ship high-quality Software-as-a-Service solutions by working closely with our Product Management organization in defining and delivering frequent and high-quality releases.
- Lead the instantiation and evolution of the department operating model.
- Evolve the group's standards, policies, procedures, key performance indicators, and organizational structure to support activity and growth, including leading the advancement of our Software Development Lifecycle and advancing and evolving our agile development process.
- Manage department finances by working closely with our Finance team to develop and monitor departmental budgets and financial forecasts.
Key Candidate Qualifications
The successful candidate will have extensive (typically 10 years) of experience in software engineering, including several years (typically 5 years) of experience leading a software engineering team. This person will have a proven track record in setting and executing large-scale strategies for software engineering and in creating value through the delivery of top-tier SaaS solutions. He/she will be a strong leader of people with a record of success in expanding and elevating the capabilities and performance of the team. A Bachelor's degree is required. In addition, the candidate must complete and pass the federal government's lengthy and extensive eQIP background check process.
In addition to the above, the following technical qualifications and personal attributes are sought:
- Proven success in creating a roadmap, vision, and strategy for an entire portfolio of software solutions.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to quickly grasp business strategy, ability to storyboard and drive business model innovation by leveraging technology.
- Change agent with strong business acumen ('business savvy technologist') with the ability to understand downstream and upstream impacts.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize diverse sets of projects.
- Current or recent experience in a large, highly matrixed company (i.e., Fortune 250), with proven ability to influence leaders and key stakeholders in such an environment.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills at all organizational levels, including the ability to skillfully convey technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
- The polish, poise, and executive presence that will ensure effective interaction with senior and executive level audiences.
- Highly collaborative mindset and excellent relationship-building skills, including the ability to engage diverse stakeholders and SMEs and win their co-ownership in the outcome.
- Experience as a leader of, or key contributor to, large RFP responses.
- Experience managing external vendor relationships.
- Ability to foster a culture of innovation and curiosity.
- Entrepreneurial spirit and high tolerance for ambiguity.
- Healthcare-related experience is a strong plus.
