Job Description - Maintenance Mechanic / 40 Hours / Day / BWH Engineering (3307225)
Under general supervision, performs preventive maintenance and repairs mechanical equipment and systems throughout the entire hospital complex.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs preventive and/or predictive maintenance and repairs on mechanical equipment and systems throughout the hospital including fire extinguishers.
- Makes repairs as necessary to building operations and mechanical systems including replacement of belts, drives, filters, seals, motors, and pumps.
- Repairs all HVAC systems in the hospital (fan units, A/C units, and exhaust fans); including conducting manometer readings and inspecting and diagnosing problem equipment.
- Responds to all emergency situations when and where appropriate and/or necessary and may cover route throughout the complex.
- Responsible for cleaning all Engineering areas (Bedtower, Peter Bent Brigham, Thorn Building, BLI, MRB).
- Performs routine work such as unclogging drains, replacing washers and/or faucets, and replacing light bulbs and cords.
- Responds to routine work such as hanging pictures, installing cabinets, door locks, and hanging bulletin and chalkboards.
- Performs minor adjustments to beds and stretchers.
- Must have a good working knowledge of various tools and may occasionally assist other tradesmen in their duties related to plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and carpentry work.
- Maintains a safe working environment in areas of Engineering Department responsibility.
- May be required to carry the on-call pagers.
- May be required to work weekends or rotating shifts. Other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned and work with other departments in emergency situations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must successfully interact and cooperate with other groups within the hospital.
- Must be able to clearly explain issues to other hospital personnel.
- High school graduate with over 2 years mechanical or electrical experience and/or a graduate of a technical or vocational school.
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
- Good working knowledge and effective use of standard hand tools, small power tools, and related mechanical specialty tools.
- May occasionally (less than 15% of the time) get involved in a dirty or hazardous environment in the performance of duties.
- Occasionally (less than 15% of the time) must exert effort to lift over 30lbs.
- Constant tours and walking throughout the facility.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works independently as assigned tasks. Must refer to supervisory staff on matters of exception or clarification of policies and procedures.
