The opportunity
The Product Development and Engineering roles are core of Magic Leap’s revolutionary AR capabilities. These highly collaborative teams are responsible for our organization's engineering and technical operations, performing cutting-edge and complex scientific research and development that is 'defined as we build' to create new AR products, features, and marketplaces. Activities include undertaking research, design, development, and implementation activities to improve Magic Leap’s AR products and services; designing, constructing, testing, and operating equipment; ensuring that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, and performance are met in production processes; interpreting plans, drawings, and specifications; and collaborating across all Magic Leap teams to ensure our AR product and features provide a high-quality, immersive experience, meeting and exceeding our customer’s needs and our business objectives.
As a Director, Calibration Software within our Hardware Engineering group, you will be responsible for leading a team of 4-6 Software and Systems Engineers to deliver factory calibration algorithms and software from concept to production-ready code. Ideal candidate is a strong collaborator; able to reach across organizations to clarify expectations, achieve 'buy-in' where appropriate, and verify system performance through to the final customer. As an ideal candidate, you have a strong technical background and are excited to provide coaching on topics including geometric computer vision, nonlinear optimization, and software development best practices.
This is a hybrid position that will require close proximity to our headquarters in Plantation, FL or our Sunnyvale, CA office.
What you’ll do
- Lead a team of software engineers with the ability to still be hands-on and versatile
- Drive implementation of calibration algorithms from concept phase to production-ready code
- Implement/enforce processes that ensure a high standard of quality for software development including code review, unit testing, and source control
- Implements/enforces processes to ensure algorithmic correctness and robustness
- Coach your team to deliver quality code supported by unit tests / integration tests as well as validation of performance with real world data
- Exhibit compassionate leadership, communicate clear performance expectations, and coach your team towards independence
- Understand when an off-the-shelf solution is appropriate and when creative, in-house designs are necessary
- Identify short and long-term solutions, confidently schedule work, and close issues in a timely manner
- Independently pursue new skills/knowledge as needed to complete projects
- Drive development in sync with high-level product goals (eg. build schedule, budget, cycle time, performance, etc.)
- Drive collaboration between organizations to bridge communication gaps, clarify internal/external customer requirements, identify risks, sync dependencies, and support transparent exchange of data
The experience you bring
- 12+ years of professional experience in software development with at least 3-5 years of experience related to computer vision or computational geometry
- Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering or similar discipline, or equivalent relevant experience in an applicable field. We are most interested in your total experience and professional achievements.
- Strong leadership skills with a demonstrated record of leading a team of engineers to success
- Working knowledge of statistics for hypothesis testing, process capability analysis, and process sensitivity metrics
- Exceptional presentation, organization, and logistical skills
- Experience with C++ and CMake. Experience creating and maintaining complex code bases
- Experience with signal processing and filtering
- Demonstrated knowledge of concepts in multi-view geometric computer vision
- Must be comfortable in a highly dynamic and creative environment bound by time constraints
It’s exciting if you also have
- Basic proficiency in Matlab and Python is a plus
- Experience with JIRA and driving teams with an agile mindset is a plus
- Experience in opto-mechanics, optics, robotics is a plus

Our salary ranges are determined by role, level and location. In addition to salary, Magic Leap offers a discretionary bonus, equity, and a fully comprehensive benefits package for eligible employees.
US Base Salary Range
$148,000 — $246,000 USD
