Position Purpose
The Head of Middle School is energized by the mission of St. John’s Episcopal School and is equipped to lead the Middle School’s academic day, including all aspects of teaching and learning of the core curriculum. The Head of Middle School is responsible for faculty supervision, students’ academic experience, and parent engagement.
Key Accountabilities
- Champion the philosophy and mission of the School while meeting pedagogical goals and objectives.
- Embody the tenets of Episcopal education committed to:
- Healthy pursuit of academic excellence through alignment with the core curriculum.
- Collaboration with the Academic Team in designing intentional programs.
- Nurturing an inclusive community where dignity is respected.
- Foster high ethical standards, integrity, and respect for all.
- Understand the culture and climate of the School and represent it externally.
- Demonstrate sensitivity and cultural competency in academic program development.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Oversee the MS Technology Program.
- Supervise the MS Athletics Directors and Program.
- Oversee the divisional budgetary process.
- Prepare administrative reports for the Board of Trustees.
Faculty Supervision
- Supervise Middle School instructional and support personnel.
- Observe faculty in their classrooms and assess curriculum alignment.
- Collaborate in the faculty hiring process.
- Provide instructional coaching and professional development.
- Conduct workshops for faculty on current trends in education.
Student Assessment
- Partner with faculty to define avenues of growth for students.
- Assist teachers in matching assessment instruments to curriculum objectives.
- Ensure uniformity in assessment and academic standards.
- Collaborate with faculty to review homework expectations.
- Build relationships with students and foster a joyful environment.
Collaboration and Teamwork
- Establish productive partnerships with colleagues.
- Participate in committee meetings and School-sponsored events.
- Chaperone occasional field trips.
Growth Mindset
- Receive and apply feedback for professional growth.
- Network with Division Heads at other schools.
- Attend conferences to remain current in education.
Qualifications – Education, Skills & Experience Required
- Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
- Proven experience handling confidential materials with integrity.
- Mastery in teaching, curriculum development, and instructional design.
- Experience developing and leading programs.
- Demonstrated leadership experience.
- Exceptional organizational and time-management skills.
- Strong work ethic and enthusiasm for working with students.
- Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
- Regularly works in standard office conditions.
- Ability to move items weighing up to 30 lbs.
- Ability to work flexible hours as needed.
